My peers seem to have lumped me in with the other AMV creators that shouldn't have been in the Pro contest but entered anyway. It seems I got passed over for other crappy videos that somehow made the final cut. I followed the rules, used quality source footage, and made a great entry to me... and I still feel like a total loser.

What good is making AMVs for yourself when you don't even make the final cut for a contest? My entry at Katsucon didn't make the final cut, and now my entry for AWA Pro didn't make the final cut either. If it really isn't about the prizes or recognition, then why do I still feel crappy about not being in the final list of candidates for the categories?

I wonder if any of you out there can give encouragement for those of us that didn't make the final nominations lists for AWA Pro... things that happen like this really tend to discourage me from making more AMVs.... how can I keep myself motivated to making AMVs and competing on the same level as the heavy-hitting power-editors?

This is why I don't vote or participate in AWA Pro anymore :?

Because of people who whine like you.

On a serious note, if you can't compete with "heavy hitting power-editors", than just keep making videos and youll get better.

Or not. :P

If this were true, then that guy who's made 200+ LinkinBall vids is the best AMV editor on the planet.

I find it humorous that the person who deceived the community with a duplicate account and outright cheated someone out of a VCA nomination for "Rookie of the Year" is complaining about a contest being unfair.

Read the rules of the contest. There is nothing that says an entry must be "brand spankin' new" like it does for Masters. The concept of Pro is exactly as Ashyukun says, that we behave like professionals which the exact opposite of what you're doing and what most of this thread is.

Behaving like professionals means that regardless of knowing who did an entry, you'll still vote fairly and give the deserving video a vote. In reality, even the "blind" entries were pretty obvious and I was able to guess most of them (including your own). Did that sway my vote? I'd like to think not.

Again, read the rules. Minus the vid with a bumper, no one broke any and there is no need to whine. In fact, I think those of us who submitted a video already released did it....TO HAVE FUN. I myself wanted the DVDs and the fun of discussing vids with my peers and "the guessing game." I had an absolute blast and couldn't care less if someone is whining about people *not breaking the rules*.

In fact, I'm really glad I skipped Masters to compete in this (unlike last year). As people said, it's the best contest at AWA in terms of enjoyment and I somewhat regret entering Master's last year based on this year's experience.

In any case, sorry if I'm being harsh, but you're whining with no real basis. Go read the rules.

The irony of you including his post after writing a five (or so) paragraph exposition on how important it is to "behave like professionals" and "having fun" is too good to go unnoticed.
This is a block of text that can be added to posts you make. There is a 512 character limit.

well it does hold true to most, if you want to improve... i've made 99 amvs and my last was better then my first.. hell... all of mine this year are better *not counting TBDBZVE* most creators do get better the more they work at it, but amvs require a LOT of effort, and if you keep trying, and keep putting effort into them, you'll get it one day!

norskotaku wrote:Vlad, I would be interested to know what the community was like prior to there being so many contests. the growing trend of the amv community revolving around contests is not surprising, but I think it has to do with more than just the desire to win

I've made music video for longer than I've compeated in contests... Back in the late 80s and early 90s, it was just a treat to show it to a small gathering like at a club or even a total treat to have it play at a convention. I was way more satisfied with people just enjoying them rather then seeing all the contests as now...

In short, it was a lot more fun.. People did not flame each other, nor did they complain about everything under the sun about contests, videos, etc... Back then it was something special that a handfull of us shared.. Plain and simple...

Frankly these days the community in one respect is spoiled rotten... It's gone beyond a fun hobby in some cases and as with any thign that gets popular, there are now "clases" of creators and videos...

Now, it's not all doom and gloom since I've made a lot of friends and talked with fellow hobyists ove rthe last several years as well.. This is invaluable! Frankly I don't care about all the stats, that video X is #1, that creator Y has been elivated to stardom by the fans, etc... To me it's all about having a fun hobby and meeting new people I can call friends... If I have to choose between that and contest, then to hell with the contests

well said. make sure I get a chance to shake your hand next time we're both at the same con.

it must have been fun back in the day before it became so big, but I guess it's not unlike anime fandom in general. I sometimes long for the days when I would sit and enjoy anime all by myself, rather than having hundreds of people to argue with about it.

I've heard enough stories about the "olden" days to know that there was a FANTASTIC deal of the same ol' controversy, back-stabbing, pissy-ness, and general LAME-ness... we only think it's worse now because there's more of us. We're bound to hear about it more often :P.

I think you're just such a good-natured person, Vlad, that you probably found your way around it all :P.

For goodness sake, HOW many videos got nominated? 40. Out of 58. That's nearly 70% of the videos. If you start going beyond that, it's not even a contest anymore... it's just an exposition ^^. Though, I think we're beyond that point of analysis, now... just wanted to pop that in.

FUN. HAVE IT.

Yea. Yea... I'm an old guy so of course the good old days were better.... seriously though this particular facet of it was more fun in the "olden days", but we are still human beings and all the other crap was present in everything else... really, all I am pointing out here is that I found it to be more enjoyable without the contests that attracted all the politics... and NO, I'm no saint be far and am prone to the same human errors and politics as anyone else  8)

Anyway....just for the record, I've have no complaints about Pro itself at all... It's an enjoyable contest and I loved a lot of videos on those discs...
