Ushicon4, January 2005

Some of you may have seen the debate that went on in the Anime Conventions forum over whether or not Ushicon would, indeed, have an AMV contest instead of the showcase that we previously had.

We now have 2 contests.

First let me begin by saying: USHICON STILL HAS THE AMV SHOWCASE. It will still take any and all submissions, bounded by time and the guidelines, of course. Because we like the idea of the Showcase, but do hear the cries of those for a contest, we have instituted two LIMITED contests.

The first is the Hentai Music Video contest. It will, of course, be run during the Hentaifest. While I've not seen any child porn hentai (and never want to), and we realize the Supreme Court has ruled it legal, don't submit any to the Con. If you do, we'll accept the video, tell you we're showing it, and then have Security kick the ever lovin' crap out of you near the dumpsters. Also, if you're not 18 and make a submission for this contest, do realize that you will NOT get to see the contest, or the Hentaifest in general. The judging on this one will be a bit odd. We at Ushicon, being fat pale nerds, have been to a number of Hentaifests in our day. As such, we know that giving any sort of paper product to people in a Hentaifest only encourages deviant behavior. So for the "Best Video" award, the judging will be done by audience applause. There will also be a Judges' Artistic Award. So if you've been channelling the spirit of Stanley Kubrick and/or Linda Lovelace, and you've not found an outlet for that yet, please submit something.

The second contest is the Theme Contest. As one might expect, this will be videos with a specific theme. This will only have one award, the Best Video (or some similar yet more high falutin' title) award. It will be decided by the audience, probably through balloting, though we may rig a noise meter and use applause.

There will be prizes for all awards. We're not sure what they'll be yet. Current thoughts are DVDs or engraved Cowbells.

Oh yeah... the theme. Well, since it's the end of Winter, and we're all getting tired of it by that point, and because, more importantly, Ushicon broke me up with my girlfriend (well, not REALLY, but it was when we realized it wasn't going to work. 14 months of my life... wasted... *sniff*), your 2005 Theme is... HATE.

Go, make cool videos. Or uncool ones. We have 2 contests and a showcase for you to submit them to.

If you want to submit them electronically (and I hope you do), then I suggest you use the FTP site we have set up for that purpose. AMV.HEADGEAR.ORG Login is anonymous. You cannot upload to the PUB directory, but you can to the Incoming AMV folder. Right now our bandwidth is capped at 100k/sec. We can increase that if we get enough submissions.

Our general submission guidelines are over in the Anime Conventions board. Most of them still apply to the contests. I'd repost them here, but it's a loooooooooooooong post.

If you have any questions, feel free to contact me at video@ushicon.com or on AIM I'm Driftpeasant.

Happy AMV creating. We hope to see your work at Ushicon.

Since "HATE" is a decent theme, I'll give it a shot next year.

A Theme Contest?

You didn't think this through did you?

So we are going to be watching nothing but HATE themed videos for the contest? No drama? No comedy? No Parody?

But I figured as much would come out from a CON with no CONTEST experience.

The theme is hate. If you want to make a drama based video that centers around hate, go ahead. Same with parody. It's a theme, not an indication of the way the video has to go.

I admit I'm not really an AMV creator past the "hey, that idea sounds cool" stage, but I can think of several ways off the top of my head to make a fairly funny video centered around hate. "Stars" from Les Miserables set to Digi Charat footage of interplay between Rabi en Rose and Digiko would seem to both be funny, damned weird, and go with the hate theme. "Hate Is All You Need" by Delgados set to footage of Touga from Ranma 1/2 would probably end up fairly touching, but could very easily be played for laughs. Much as I am loathe to admit I know what the song is about, Justin Timberlake's "Cry Me A River" could be set to any of the many painful relationships in Marmalade Boy and come out quite well. If you make it with Rokutanda as the central character, I can't see it coming out as anything but funny. While I don't know if it qualifies as a music video, per se, I imagine you could come up with a decent trailer rehash of "The War of the Roses" to anime footage and I don't know of much that symbolizes hate better. Pretty much everyone on this forum is better than AMV creation than I am. I have every confidence that these are not the only possible ideas centered on hate.

We're not looking for some ode to hatred, or a paean to pain or anything. Just something centered around a central theme. That theme, this year at least, is Hate. I imagine next year it'll be Winter, or Cows, or Texas, or perhaps Slurpees. Possibly something else entirely.

But to answer your question, yes, we did give this some thought. I'm sorry if it doesn't meet with your approval. Part of the reason for the decision was to try to encourage new videos for submission, because it seems unlikely that lots of folks will just randomly have hate themed videos lying around. At the same time, if you happen to HAVE a really good hate themed video, we don't want to exclude you from submitting it. Part of the reason was that we didn't want to just have a traditional AMV contest. We'd like to be a bit different. Thus, a theme contest.

Well, unless you have some serious issues between now and 11:59 PM December 31st, 2004, I think you're fine.

I look forward to seeing your submission.

You would have recieved new videos anyway if you had just said "We are having a contest."

-_-.

It's not that my skills aren't up to it...its just the way things are run at Ushicon that makes me not want to partcipate and save my better ideas and videos or better CONs who actually know how to run contests.

Well, gee. Kinda a catch 22 here isn't it?

Several Texas AMV creators asked for an AMV competition. Ushicon now has 2. And now you're knocking us because things are run badly?

Realistically, aside from AWA, how hard is it to run one of these things? Provide guidelines for submission. Check. Provide electronic transfer option. Check. Post to the ORG to tell people about it. Check. Have time and space set aside at the con for the event. Check. Provide prizes. Check.

Yeah, I'm new at this. Yeah, this is the first Ushicon with AMV contests. But surfing through the message boards, I've never seen anyone ever actually say "You didn't have a contest before. Therefore it must not be run competently. QED I shall not submit." If you want Ushicon to have a good contest then submit. Show up. Watch what we do. Post constructive criticism to the forums. Hell, volunteer for the con for that matter. Damning us because we haven't done this before is counterproductive. We were happy with the Showcase. We set this thing up because several Texas AMV creators, YOU AMONG THEM, asked us for it. So we didn't go with straight tradition. Sorry. I didn't realize that themed contests were so onerous. Yes, perhaps, we stifle the creative juices because you can't just submit anything for the contest. That, however, is why we still have a Showcase. It hasn't gone anywhere.

You know where the UT Anime Club meets. You know how to find me in person, and you're more than welcome to come talk to me about this stuff. Thus far, I think we're doing better than last year. We have 2 contests where before there were none. And the vid head is actively listening to the folks on the ORG. What complaint can you have thus far? Tell me what it is and I'll try to do something about it. If it's just "I'd rather not make a theme video" though, then I'm sorry. There's nothing I can do for you.

Is hate close to sorrow? Cause my video is about pain & suffering, but there's a lot of hate for sure. Like arm and head decapacitating.

That's not a bad idea.

Well, I'll think about the theme contest and see what I can come up with. I guess its better than no contest at all
