You and a dozen others :D

I'd normally say "Bring it," but I think I'll just cry now

Corran, sadly you're not the only one gunnin' for me apparently :(. Kusoyaro and even Doki have expressed interest. Asshats.

I guess it's time to reply to these nice comments throughout this thread. Been busy with well...life after Otakon ;)

Title? I had a title to defend? I was not informed of this. Will next year be in a steelcage?

Thanks!

TheLongshot wrote:Well, the only one I voted for that won was the Richard Marx one. Not surprising to me, since it was the strongest video in a weak category.

First off thanks, but I'd disagree. Although I won, I felt most of the videos in the category were competitive and I thought it was "up in the air" going to the awards ceremony. They're all worth checking out imo.

The feeling is mutual. I'm glad you got to see your video on the big screen, but next time just calm down and don't shake so much ;).

And to even out the self-whoring, some pimpage of videos that don't seem to be getting much talk :-/.

I was thoroughly impressed by your video. This makes three cons in a row that I've been impressed by one of your videos (AWA - Overdrive, ACen - Kiddy Grade and now this). Perhaps I should keep you in my radar ;).

In any case, your video was very well done. Specifically it was very tightly edited. You rarely missed a dominant beat or rhythm and the video was very dynamic and active. Sadly you were in (debateably) the most competitive category (imo) and thus it was hard to choose a winner. regardless.

atchang wrote:One of these days I'm gonna submit a video to otakon that doesn't get me into trouble with someone about category.. :) Honestly.. I didn't know what category it should be in because I didn't think it fit any of them.. So I left it to the contest. My last video at Otakon got moved it to Action/Upbeat by the contest and offended maboroshi .. Will I never learn...

Actually after watching your video a number of times, it's starting to really grow on me. I'll be honest that the first time I saw it (during the afternoon screening), I didn't like it that much. I saw that the editing was good, but well...perhaps I'm just negatively biased to game music videos. I also think a % of this was the crowd cheering just to the titlecard (i.e. seeing "FFX") prior to the video even playing.

Now that I'm home, I've watched it more and specifically, listened to the song A LOT. You can thank Ashyukun for that. I'd say about 7 of us are now addicted to this song bc of him (and you) :P. On top of that, I now see what you were going for. Although it's not a "sappy" video, I can see why the audience would vote for it. It feels like a "real" music video with singing, dancing, etc. I guess what I mean is that I could see something like this on MTV :).

...and did I mention the song? ARGH I'm listening to it at work again for like the 7th time >_<.

BTW it was humorous that your video was right before mine. People thought we were either A) the same person or B) related. -_-;;

There was cheering?!?!?!?! at the title card??? WOW Thats a first... Historically title cards for my vids produce an audible groan from the audience.

People totally cheered for the title card. It was just when the first scene with Yuna dancing on the water where many of the creators groaned, fearing that it was going to be another one of those videos.

Oh right, but do you remember your first amv contest. That was a major event. Anyway I don't know what category I'll be submiting next year, but if I come up against you again I promise it willn't be a knock off song of your previous video lol. I wonder what would have happend if Fighting For Your Love for some odd reason did win (NFG - Glory of Love) would that mean I have to go through the tourcher of Disney lol. Anyway see you around.

This is starting to sound like a challenge worth pursuing. It's for the romance category, right ? I've done that before (but not at Otakon).

Using Mark's contest review as the source, I've put all the contest entries up on the list; most have links. Unless I'm mistaken, they're also in the order of play.

rogueintellectproductions wrote:I missed the explanation on the Theme category, though. What was the criteria for that?

It wasn't a category. It was an award given to the best video that followed the theme of "conflict", which apparently we here at the Org forums voted on, months prior.

I'm guessing most of us totally forgot about it. I know I did, until Geoff announced the award.

Actually, I thought that the "theme" was not something we voted on, but what Otakon's theme was ("The Olympics", apparently- I didn't even know the con had a theme until after asking someone- on staff- about it). Either way- I think (no offense to the video that won the award- I believe this was the one that wasn't in the finals, so as such I probably haven't seen it...) it was a very poor choice of additional awards. If there is going to be a 'theme' award, there should be more made of the importance (or at least publicity as to what the 'theme' actually is) of it- like ACen, where there is an entire category devoted to the 'theme' that is chosen.

Personally- I think I liked it better with just having the 5 category awards. There was a reason it had been that way- as was proven quite well this year (at a number of conventions), a good comedy/comedic video will frequently completely stomp everything else just because it gets the most vivid emotional reaction out of people (and bear in mind- I tend to lean toward making comedy/parody videos). With just the 5 category awards, you have 5 winners on even grounds. Throw in the 'Best of Show' award, and you somewhat lessen the importance of the 5 category awards. Even more so when you throw in two awards decided solely by one person's opinion.

I'd second DW's praise- personally your video was my choice in this category. I rather like P9 (though I'm apparently one of the only people I know who does...), and having fiddled with an upbeat/action video to it myself know how hard it can be at times to come up with the needed scenes for it- which you did exceptionally well, as well as some very tight masking and beat matching.

MWAAHAAHAAAHAAA    ;P

Like DW, I've come to appreciate and enjoy your video more after repeated viewings. With as many FF videos as I've seen over the last two years, that it was done well enough and was a fresh enough take on the footage that in many cases we've seen over and over again is quite impressive.

This was a very interesting contest in terms of the content, IMO. Typically I expect to see a majority of videos using the handful of series that are 'really popular' this year in the contest, and only a handful of more obscure/older/less popular titles- but this year it just felt like the odd-series-out took over the contest. Two videos using Rose of Versailles, two Video Girl Ai videos, a Kanon video(/MAD :p), a video incorporating (very well at that) the Live Action Saillor Moon, Princess Nine, etc. And a couple of videos took sources that many of us consider to be overused and played out (FF, Eva, LP) and proved that a truly good editor can make even overplayed source enjoyable and impressive.

Now to go work on a Romance video to dethrone DW. :P (j/k- halfway at least.... I don't know if I'll end aiming for romance or not yet)

You're right, there weren't any groaner videos. I thought it was neato-keen that there were two FLCL videos in the contest that did not have a single frame of footage in common - in fact, they were basically total opposites. As a matter of fact, when there were two videos based on the same series, they were still really different. It kept things fresh.

Wow, I don't feel to good about winning best themed anymore -_-;; .

Meh, if its any consolation, my video got 2nd place in the Drama/Serious catageory (Yes Ashyukun, it was in the finals). So I guess if you take that into account, they didn't give it to some excessively crappy video, just my crappy video :?

You should feel good about winning best theme - your video was great (45's one of the songs that's been stuck in my head since Otakon.) I think it's just that people forgot/didn't know about the award until it was given.

Plus there was the Geoff's Choice award, which might be what Ashyukun was referring to, since that video was not in the finals.

2nd place to Faithless is pretty damned good, AFAIC.

I wasn't meaning to be insulting to any of the videos or their creators- It looks like I got my videos backwards ANTDrakko and it was the 'Geoff's Choice' video that was not shown. If anything, I think that the video he chose for his choice award should have automatically been either put into the contest or at least shown to the full audience- I know a lot of people (including contest/con staff) were confused when it was announced because they had no idea what it was since it hadn't been in the contest screening. If he felt it deserved an award, it more than deserved to be shown to the full audience- I know a number of us consider simply having a video shown to the full Otakon audience and not winning to be worth winning a lesser contest. Your video was perfectly fine- my problem is just with the changes that Geoff made to the contest that sort of threw off the balance that I felt it had before. None of the videos in the contest could really be considered to have been 'crappy', IMO. I won't lie and say that there weren't a few that I thought weren't up to par for the rest of the contest (and no, I'm not saying which- besides, judging from certain reviews it would seem some would consider mine to have been one of them), but I don't think it would be fair at all to call any of the videos in the contest 'crappy'.

Do that, keep me in the radar, *hint* AWA Pro ;) Though it's something totally different from the 3 you saw, I need a slight change from dance :P

Well, thanks again. And yes, as soon as I saw the names vicbond and kusoyaro and all the others on the upbeat-finalists I knew this will be nearly impossible. But I was glad being a finalist and not to win anything.

First off, I believe Bobbyukun was referring to the second Geoff award (yours was theme) in that it wasn't in the contest.

Secondly, I think a number of us are a bit annoyed that the coordinator made-up two awards and was the sole judge. I recall him saying we might have an artistic and technical award, but never said how we'd judge it and so on. At the award ceremony he says something like "And my awards go to" and we all went "WTF?" When he chose a video not even in the contest, we were a bit perturbed, especially since he never mentioned said awards.

I am in Pro as well and will keep an eye out. I'd say your vids, silver_moon's and a couple others have been some real gems I might've missed out on this year. I watch AMVs rarely, but the few times I do, it sometimes pays off.

IIRC you still did fairly well vote wise. I don't have exact numbers, but I'm pretty sure you made a strong standing. Also, "names" don't always win awards. I've seen plenty of "no-names" win awards and make impressive videos. In fact, your videos and that of other foreigners (istiv I believe is in France?) is really starting to make me realize how much talent is outside of North America.

But yeah, don't get discouraged by "names" and such. I didn't. ;) The audience sees the video more than the editor behind it. There is maybe *one* name I think that audiences will get all hyped up about prior to the video. You gotta keep in mind that con audiences aren't as informed as we are.
