Aside from follow the rules, no, there isn't anything else you can do. Everything else is in the hands of the contest coordinator and the tech staff. THEY, as people who have attended multiple cons will tell you, can have things fuck up in an infinite number of ways. The video equipment can malfunction, the codec can break, the ballots can be mislabeled, the judges can be confused, etc.
As far as what you should watch for as a contestant, don't get too stressed out over whether you win/lose or whatever. It's just an AMV contest, nothing more, nothing less. You get your little ego boost by seeing your video on the giant screen (and maybe getting a big round of cheers from the audience), but the world isn't going to end based on whether or not you take home a trophy.
