Otakon 2004 prescreenings When and Where if any?

Postby genestarwind21122 » Mon May 10, 2004 11:37 am

Does anybody know if there are going to be prescreenings for this years Otakon. And if so when and where? Also did they get the college Maryland to host them again where they had it last year?

Or is it to soon to tell.

There will be two locations for prescreenings this year, one in King of Prusha, PA and the second In Baltimore, MD.

I can't give away the specifics on dates and exact locations to the public, but those who submitted videos and expressed an interest in attending the screenings will be notified as soon as we get our email problems squared away.

Ah, email problems. Last weekend, I wasn't available to take a call from somebody related to the Otakon AMV contest. I was notified that an email would be send to me on Tuesday, but as of tonight I haven't yet received any word. Are these "problems" the reason for the delay?

Sure are. Since we have been trying to send out so many messages at once every email provider we have tried to use (AOL, Hotmail, Comcast, etc) have all blocked the send because of an anti spam protocal they use limiting the number of messages you can send.

Yesterday (May 13th) I setup a mailing list to fix all this, so some time shortly after the 17th (the FTP submissions deadline) when we get every single form processed, everyone who submitted (minus the people who submitted and did not give an email for us to reach them) will have recieved a message from us.

I just learned that a number of submission forms were sent to the address for sending Tape/Disc submissions (which is different from the address the forms were suposed to be sent). Luckely for these people we are accepting these, so once they are forwarded I am sure that more people will recieve a conformation.

So if you have yet to recieve a message confirming your submission/ inviting you to the new mailing list, then please be patient as we are still processing submissions.

Ignore that.... If you send a submission, you will be notified.
The pPrescreenings are invite only, not public. That is what the con itself if for.

What's the point of having a pre-screening then? If it's invite-only you might as well just send tapes of the videos to the people you're inviting. Also, what is the criteria for being invited?

IANOS (I am not Otakon Staff), but...

In the past it's been submitters, members of sponsoring anime clubs (Terrapin Anime Society, UMBC Anime Society, etc.), and usually people bring a friend or two.

What I can say about Otakon is that the method they have been using seems to work, because they tend to have a really good contest, with videos placed in the right categories. So don't worry to much about who they pick for the pre-screening. They get enough to make it really fair.

Well, the people iserlohn just mentioned are the ones who are invited. ^_^

Criteria for being invited? Hmmm lets see..... Either 1) Submitting a video to the contest, 2) Being in one of the Anime clubs/ associates hosting the prescreenings, or 3) Be the friend of either #one or #two and asked to come by them.

The point is, they are no public (I.E. any Joe Blow Otaku, can't just walk in off the street because they want to see all the entries before the convention).
The point of the prescreening is to have KNOWLEGABLE reviewers rate the videos for value and content. It is NOT a free show for anyone who just happens by with nothing better to do on a Saturday.

Anyone who wants to see all the videos is free to come to Otakon and watch every single one if they wish.

As for the idea of sending videos out to everyone invited, there are too many people (at least 200 I know of off hand) that have opprotunity to come to the prescreenings. I know know about you, but considering that we are looking at 7 or 8 TWO HOUR LONG tapes for the prescreenings, I think sending tapes to people would be a little excessive and impractical to say the least.

Oh, but there will be three locations this year as Geoff has stated. They just won't be announced to the general public is all.

I think the main issue for the invite only.. is that some of the pre-screening locations are a persons home.. and there's only so much room that can be handled/supported with each of the venues.
