The search for the AMV superstar, (American idol style!)

Postby Bakadeshi [AuN Studios] » Sun Apr 18, 2004 6:54 pm

What do you think of a contest like this?

Have a prescreening based on past works diferent editors have done in the past, they can choose whatever AMV to submit, then a panel of judges, ala Simon, Paula, Randy style narrows down the list to the 10 that will untimately compete agaisnt each other Iron Chef style and Audience Votes determin who is "booted" from the competition based on their creation.

Then in the top 12 (or so) competition, they have to create AMVs based on a list of songs in a specific theme (like 80s, or Trailer, or Action, or Eurodance, etc) given them a week in advance. A week later we put up the AMVs for download to the public, and they post their votes on the website. (of course some kind of IP tracking script would have to be implemented to prevent multiple votes) Not sure we should specify the anime, as that would limit people who don't have that anime to work with. Then the person who receives the least votes gets booted off.

We could get some super critical person like Xanthrax to play Simon, SOmebody who is generally more leanient to play Paula, and someone inbetween to play Randy. Ofcourse have it all broadcasted on some official website for the contest. Maybe even host the actual contest in a MIRC chat room or something. Or maybe even right here on the forums.... Although I think live would be better.

I think it would be fun! Ofcourse there would have to be some kind of Nice prize to motivate people to participate.... hmmm....

To make it even more fun, we should proabably limit it to people that havn't been editing for a very long time, in otherwords, finding people with the most potential rather than the BEST editor. Otherwise the top 10 would be filled pretty fast with people like Absolutedestiny, Koopiskeva, Fluxmeister, etc, and wheres the fun in that? we all know they are good already. Not to mention people might not want to even bother entering.... with that kindof competition. They should probably be the judges lol.

Anyway its an idea that has been steaming in my head for the longest, And I would like to hear some thoughts on it! If it has already been done and I just don't know about it, post that aswell.

I know. I was asking when we would have to have our entry, if it went on.

well this is a pretty big scale contest, so I would have to decide after putting together everything, like judges, website layout, the scripting to handle the voting, and all that. you would have some time to submit.

ALso, would any of the more experienced editors and/or reviewers out there be interested in being judges if this actually gets rolling?
Also, Nothing is concrete yet, anyone who has suggestions can post them aswell.

As an adendum, just like with American idol, I will proabbly add a twist in with some of the Theme only requirements like [only simple edits, no filters] or [special effects driven only] or [story driven] and stuff like that. In otherwords, we are looking for an editor that can handle all kinds of styles to be named the Super Editor.

Entries would be listed anonymously if judges are chosen from this forum, so there is no favoritism.

If the winner from this contest goes on to do some sort of debut solo project, I'll shoot them.

We really, really don't need to elevate a LinkinBall Z producer in this way.

heh, i doupt that would happen, knowing who would most likely be the judges, most of the linkiln ball Z vid editorswould have been droped before the top 12, unless its actaully a *gasp* Good linkin ball z video. (techincally)

Is it just me or was that the point of the original American Idol? Besides the massive multi-ton wads of cash that is.

Anyway I think it sounds like a good idea. Just diferent enough to distinguish it from most other general AMV contests. It sounds like a pretty big undertaking and the live thing never really worked too well in th Iorn Chef but a variation might be interesting. Maybe a live chat between the judges as they confer with each other about the vids.
The main problem as I see it is that the beginers only will attract a lot of people looking to compete on thier own level (like me for instance) but the twist of having to be able to do any kind of AMV will discorage people. Any creator can take a stab at a story vid, that just takes artistic tallent. Effect driven AMV's however take a lot more knowledge and, ironically, experience. Both ideas seem good but I don't know how well they will fit together.

There will have to be some sort of comparison though, or else it would be like judging a romance vid versus an action vid, not enough points of comparison between diferent styles.

I don't think a huge prize would be nessicary. Having ten qualifiers is a pretty good motivator as that gives better chances than most contests and it's an already made video.

One week is pretty short for a full length non-Iron-Chef video though. You might want to give the finalists a bit more time.

ah finally some debate and ideas. I see your point on the 2 ideas conflicting. Perhaps we should have seperate entry levels. or maybe a seperate contest for the exprienced and the inexperienced. (just throwig ideas out there)

I also see the point of the 1 week thing, I was just basing it off of american idol. However, considering we would be dropping people from the contest one at a time Ala american idol style (probably 2 at a time at first, not sure everyone wants to make 12 videos for 1 contest) it would take quite a while if we aloted a month for each one. I'm thinking only the final 2 that compete actually make a "Serious" vid project, and the previous ones are as good as they can get it within a week span. Using that idea, probably should be simple rules, like limiting what techniques, software, or effects could be used. on each, and the final 2 contestants go all out on it.

let me know what you guys think.

Since this is going to be like American Idol, is that mean the judges can be brutal?
