Uhm..the numbers I heard were 40+ people entering the contest. The growth has been exponential.

Oh HELL no. 40+? Not even close. You might be thinking of the pro contest that got 54 entries, but Master's this last year got 16. Significant upward arc in submissions, but nowhere near exponential.

As I said in the PM to you, I meant total submissions. I know entries obviously get cut for not following the rules (like not putting a coat size) and 16 were shown at the Master's showing on Sunday. As I said in the PM though, I could be wrong and be recalling the total submissions incorrectly, but I *think* that's what Quu told me.

In any case, the main reason I brought it up was to support the case that you're going to need a lot of submissions to have a decent contest with 4 categories which I still believe in regardless.

If there are extra resources to be dedicated to additional competitions, I'd rather see those resources placed with NON-competing showings. People are thoroughly expressing feelings that they don't wish to be placed on this golden pedestal ABOVE others; creating some kind of STANDARD way and place for EVERYONE to be shown together totally destroys any hint of "elitism" (god, do I hate that word, and I sincerely hope everyone else does, too).

Look at the fan-parody / trailer showings the last two years. There's been an entire ROOM dedicated to showing ONLY AMV and AMV-related (parodies, trailers) programming... and it's constantly packed with people. This should TELL us something. General con-goers WANT to see MORE of this kind of thing.

While trailers are still such a young concept, I'd love to see an organized, non-competiting showing of them. Sure, trailers are starting to seep over into contests and win awards (AWA), but I still think they're new enough that a con could really take a stand with non-competiting showings and let everyone be on equal ground, be shown together, and just have a good time.

Of course, I'm very biased (after seeing The Professional and Obligatory EVA Trailer played at Otakon 2K1 and 2K2, respectively), but watching a crowd that filled MORE than a single room want to see that kind of stuff...

The con is supposed to be for the general con-goers, not the AMV creators... I think if we pay attention to what THESE people want, it's showing they want more, more, more... and they don't care if its competiting, or not.

I can't agree with you more. I'd like to see more resources and budgeting go to develop the existing AMV activities (Contest, panel, AMV room, etc). There was talk in having a FULL AMV track and that would be great. Also, I know Otakon being a huge con has restrictions on space and times so adding another contest will mean the regular one will be cut down...

I'll toss my hat into this discussion as well. I'm with D-dubya and Vlad, I'd rather see more focus in general put on AMVs in general than to see a 'masters' level contest. As has been said- many people already regard Otakon's contest as one of the 'masters' level contests on the 'AMV contest circuit'. I don't see any reason to make a level above it. There's no shortage of quality entries for it, and I seriously doubt any crowd going to see the contest has been disappointed by what they saw.

Frankly if you're going to add another contest into the mix, I'd rather see you go the other way with it and have it be more of an 'entry level' contest, where only people who haven't either a) made it into the Otakon contest before or b) ever won an award for a video can enter. This would give the newer editors who are just getting started more of a presence at the convention. I really don't think we really need another exclusive contest for the 'better editors'. I'd rather encourage the new and up-and-coming editors than have yet another contest that caters to the better of us (nothing against the better of us- but I don't think we- being somewhat presumptuous and counting myself in said group- really need it...).

YES!

We really need to look to the new creators more. I for one am not going to be making any videos that surpass the ones I've done already - it's all about the new talent.

Just to stir up the flames, but how is the end result different for creating 2 such contests where one makes a more elitist-oriented contest, than the old one, and makes a more beginners-oriented contest. I'd assume that they'd devolve down to the same thing(unless of course, the idea is to keep the current contest completely the same as it's been for the past couple of years, which really doesn't seem like a good idea).

Not if it was one contest which also gave awards to the best of the first-time con entrants.

If you're making the rules for the traditional contest mutable, I don't see how it couldn't make the rules be catered towards first time entrants. The thing that I'm concerned about is that if there's a separate first time entrant or beginner's division, that there's still a distinct division between the "beginners" and the "veterans", and that this really sounds more like a different way to sugarcoat something that so many passionately disagree with.

Well, many new creators do really well, but equally many miss out because the established creators also do well.

If there were a few awards given to encourage the new creators that came close I think it would be a good thing.

It doesnt have to be a seperate contest, just there for encouragement.

Oh, don't get me wrong, I think that giving awards to new creators is a great thing for encouraging them to submit to what's is percieved to be a very difficult contest to compete in. However, I just found it interesting to note that people dislike the idea when it's presented as giving the veterans their own place to compete so they don't intimidate the beginners, whereas people love the idea when it's presented as giving beginners their own arena to compete without the pressure of the veterans in their faces. It's wonderful how spin changes everything isn't it?

Indeed. So would you be a first time entrant if said rules were in place when you do decide to finally enter Otakon? ;)

Heh. Not quite... at least by my suggestion, he wouldn't qualify due to his having won an award before. :P Of course, if he starts making his own videos instead of making Caldwell make them for him, perhaps an exception would be in order.

Ok...I see a lot of good points...and a few bad ones...I'll attempt to sort through it all, but first...some sdie notes.
1)I apologize for not saying anything earlier...my work scedule does not permit me much time on the computer until mid-january comes by. Then, I shall have more time.

2)The original intent of this very post was to see was the public reaction was...obviously, it wasn't very good to the original idea (*respectful bow to those who thought, on some level, it was a good idea*)

3)I was a dumbass for not putting ANY details about this...AT ALL!

and now on to our regularly scheduled post...

With Otakon being a fan con...I recieved...literally hundreds of emails (many from the same guy) saying various comments like...
-"Pyson sukked runnning teh contest! U have 2 rokk bettr than it" (that's an actual quote...I saved it for the mere fact of making fun of it, as this person couldn't be more wrong...Matt, IMO, did an awesome job running it...and he "rokks", too!
-"I wish you luck" (btw, I thank all who said as such)
-"Don't blow it, fool!" (no comment)

but many of the respectable emails expressed a desire for another contest, as they only goto Otakon and no other convention in a year.

Btw, folks three things you should know about me
1)I see AMV's as an art form
2)I think all amv's are created equall
3)I've seen over 700 (thanks to the org) long before I aquired this position

So I thought (and you can't really blame me for this one) that if some of the top award winners got together in a contest where they were allowed to truely strutt their stuff and pull out all the stops...there'd be some kickass AMV's.

As far as picking the name goes...I've never been to AWA, or seen their website...as I had never thought of it. 'Masters' was just a name I picked out of the air. To the person who suggested using a name of a local competition for the name of this contest, you should know now that I respect everyone too much to call an amv contest, "The Preakness" (or prickness, as I call it) or "The AMV Crab-munchers" (YES...it IS a real contest around here), but it's a decent idea, nonetheless.

I apologize for the idea of personally handing out invitations...I thought it would add some elegance to the whole thing...not all ideas are good, I know that...I chalk this up to bad execution...nothing I really intended on doing...anyway, so let's forget about that!

Like I stated earlier, the details are sketchy, which really means is that they can be changed in many ways...so for this "Master's" thing...it's out! Consider it gone, as I'm going to consider it as "New guy wanted to try something, and it was ok on paper and that's all...back to the drawing board!" I have noticed the sugestion of a movie/trailer-thing...of which I like. I'll try to see if it's possible to make it happen this year, even!

This entire thread served a 2nd service however, which was to get some feedback (any feedback) from the community, as I prefer to chat via AIM (Superion03) instead of a forum, where I have to wait for a post...which can be anything from 1 minute to one month (depends on the forum you're on). Long story short, I'm trying to get more feedback from individuals, so I can bounce ideas off of from time to time.

So give me a hello sometime...I'm still learning the atmosphere here and I'd like to make as few trips to the school of hard knocks as possible...just a few caveats...

1)Usually if I don't know something, I'll ask
2)My thought process skips a couple steps, so not everything must be explained to me
3)If it seems I have forgotten something...I probably have...just give me a reminder and we'll be cool.

I plan on meeting some of you really soon in person, and for the rest of you, I'll meet you when I can!

Ok, fair enough...

That's pretty much to be exepected as well as the comments.... feedback in a nutshell I find contains "the good, the bad and the ugly"....

but many of the respectable emails expressed a desire for another contest, as they only goto Otakon and no other convention in a year.

I not against the idea, but concerned with how it will effect the current one and given Otakon's schedule constraints to meet the desires of fans in every field, how it would fit in time wise.

Well you have to see this from my end... Just because there is a "top award" contest does not mean I'll make a "Kick Ass" video... It also them makes it sound like the current contest does not have "Kick Ass videos!" AMVs are a HOBBY no contest drives me on how good my videos or anyone else's will be (for the most part anyway). We do this because we love it and do the best job at it in our creations. I think you won't get ANYTHING better just becuase someone danngles a bigger carrot in front of us. Sorry is this sound a bit harsh, but I just want you to understand this from my point of view as a AMV creator.

I apologize for the idea of personally handing out invitations...I thought it would add some elegance to the whole thing...not all ideas are good, I know that...I chalk this up to bad execution...nothing I really intended on doing...anyway, so let's forget about that!

What if they made a bigger golden donut?

But seriously, I have to agree with Vlad here. Personally, I make AMVs when I get the ideas and when I have the time, and which cons I send it to depend directly on when I finish it (and, sometimes, whether I win anything). And I also agree that the contest that's there already is pretty kickin' in terms of quality of the videos.
