It's the lack of people who can edit.
I know there's TWO people who live in the state of georgia who edit. TWO.
I know Mr. Pilkiton(sp.) lives a few minutes away, but the other person(who I cannot remember the name fo right now) lives a few hours away.

Okay, say we manage to get together somehow. 3 people? I'd hardly call that a friend thing. =\

I mean, if I was allowed, or had the time to drive over to some rogue Iron Chef thing with Hypeo and RVP you bet I would, but the sad truth is I can't. =\

As for what AD said, I am silenced by the harsh realityt hat is the truth. =|

Actually one thing that might make this be more likely to produce something watchable is to give the amv editors 2 sets of time, one set to set scenes to a blank timeline to generate the mood and general flow that they are looking for. Then give them a fairly short period to cut off clips such that they match up with the moments in the music.

This whole discussion gave me an idea for something that would not in practice work particularly well as an IC competition, but would make an interesting (at least to me) special-type contest or simply challenge: Choose a song. Everyone participating must use this song- whether or not they can edit it (I'd lean toward not) would be debatable. The video they make must be to this song, and they can choose any footage source they wish, with one stipulation: no cuts. The video footage has to be completely uncut, and probably completely un-modified (i.e., no speed changes), and see who can come up with the video clip that matches the song the best.

It can even win at huge prestigious con like Otakon. See a video done with Golden Boy done to Bicycle Race a couple of years back.

It seems like a good idea, but it's really just counting on an extraordinary coincidence. I've only seen one vid like this that was really incredibly good; way back before the contests were around someone did a vid using the opening animation of "Assemble Insert" set to Happy Days. Brilliant. But the only time I've seen it really work.
