AWA Expo

This forum is for the announcement and discussion of anime music video contests.

Since this is proving to be a popular topic, and a couple of general questions have shown up, I thought I'd take a minute or two to address them.

We got a lot of remarkably good live-action videos this year. I think it may finally be time to dispell the myth that live-action compillations can't be as good as AMVs.

There was one slip-up in the registration process wherein someone submitted a video to pro and several others to expo. The pro video accidentally got included in expo. We caught it during viewing, and it was removed from expo, although apparently not from the list. (Helps to have a dozen people in watching the vids at the same time.) I believe the final count is 263.

AWA expo doesn't have a "best in show" category. Too much comparing of apples and oranges would have to go on between categories for that to really mean anything. We do have a "Grand Prize," however, which traditionally goes out to the most creative, weird, inspired, or just plain freaky entry that stuns the judges. The winners from the last two years have been "Shameless Rock Video" and "Failed Experiments."

As we got a ludicrous number of entries this year, we can only be certain we'll play one entry from each contestant. 'Fraid we get to decide which one. Simpler that way, 'cause we've got a lot of stuff to keep track of. The schedule as it stands now has two 2-hour blocks on Friday for screening Expo (one of them is quite early, be warned), an overflow block on Saturday, and of course an hour's worth of time for award winners during the awards ceremony. That's not counting the early-morning request blocks. Everyone will get at least one video shown, and any extra time will be used to show the additional entries.

Post-con (possibly by as much as a week or so, depending on when I wake up) all results from the contests will be posted on the a-m-v.org forums. I also make a tradition of doing a post-con report in my a-m-v.org journal.....but be warned, those are long even for me. There's usually at least a couple of other reports and related threads in the forums as well.

There were 3 or 4 hentai vids sent in (forget precisely how many right now), as well as a couple of others that we won't be able to show during normal hours for......reasons. They will be shown.....at a different time....possibly in a different place. (Arrangements being made.)

As I understood it, the only cut that exists for Expo is that the video can be played/viewed and not destroy the viewing setup. Other than that (and probably blatantly stealing someone else's video and submitting it as your own) I don't think there's any kind of cut for Expo and anything goes...

Correct, sorta. We don't exclude for content, but we can't show stuff during the daylight hours that would get us in trouble with the cops. And some secondary entries may not be shown because of simple time limitations. The list here is the full entry list.

Judging has, indeed, begun. We watched videos for 11 hours on Saturday, 12 hours on sunday, and another 6 on Monday (man, some of you like epic-length songs). Now we just have to decide who won....

Pretty much...

It's good, but it's bad that people assume it'll clean house at every convention.

(BTW Koop is my friend and this is by no means an attack)

In fact, the two contests it's been in, it didn't win Best of Show. At ACen'03 it picked up Best Technical and at AX, I think the "Creator's award." IIRC Nappy cleaned house at AX.

It's bad to assume things in any contest. For all we know, Fluxmeister will win with "Psychological Damage" (which he didn't even enter). If "WTF" wins, the Apocalypse can't be far behind.

I believe all of the AWA deadlines have passed, and judging for the contests is already in progress...so I think your best bet is to check the calendar and submit early to the next contest you're interested in. :)

Good luck!

Being a creator who has made more live action videos then anime (still at about 4:1), I can safely say that live action AMVs are just as good as anime ones... There are just no real contests for them and so they stay unknown most of the time.... Ironically, my most popular comedy video is a live action one and has been played at AWA

Is there a schedule posted somewhere?

The hentai vids will be shown in the hentai room Saturday at midnight, among other hentai materials. Come early though becuase this room is kinda small.

Thanks Darkseid, I couldn't remember what day you were gonna be showing them on. What about the yaoi material?

I'm considering posting the VAT schedule on the message board, but I don't have it in front of me at the moment.

I'm looking forward to this year's AWA, looks like there are going to be plenty of good videos to see.

I was a little afraid my Expo entry wouldn't make it into the general screening, its a little on the violent side. :)

We're having the yaoi room Friday at midnight. I just tur the room over to the ladies and then go find something to drink. LOL

Like to see the VAT schedule myself to see if anyone remotely likes my material. heh.
