Encoding for AWA

Postby TaranT » Fri Jul 18, 2003 3:01 am

This question is for Quu (& AWA VAT staff), but I thought other people would be interested.

Now that DVD writers are common, it is easier to send very large data files. The contest rules say that MPEG2 is the preferred submission format, but I was wondering if it would be best to send the highest quality file possible (I'm thinking DV AVI, but it could be something else).

I don't want to add to your workload with the extra conversion step, but maybe you would prefer it that way if it guarantees compatibility with your hardware - not to mention consistency of quality and all that.

So, I guess this is the question: Does it help you at all to get a high quality file (better than MPEG2), or is it more of an inconvenience?

Quu will just have to convert it to mpeg2 anyway.

I'd say AD is right- if you grab Quu's TMPGEnc profiles and encode using the really high quality ones, it'll be exactly the same as if you sent him the full-sized HuffYUV file, since they're what he'd be using to convert to MPEG-2 for playback anyways. That way you can use a less expensive media or more easily upload it, and it should make a bit less work for Quu because he doesn't have to convert it himself...

ultimatly all of my files are stored as MPEG-2 (MPEG-1 is a subset of MPEG-1 so if yous submit in MPEG-1 i leave it alone)

if I do the encoding I will use the exact same profile I have listed on the website... ^_^ TMPGEnc is my favorite encoder... best price/quality

I prefer TMPGEnc, too. But with more and more software packages (NLE, DVD authoring) offering MPEG2 capabilities...I don't know, it could lead to some problems if people are entering videos using those converters instead of TMPGEnc.

I'll go ahead and do the conversions here. I need to get the new TMPGEnc anyway. Hope it works the same way as the old beta versions. :?

it does.... and I use a netstream2000 for my playback... it says so in the rules... if people give me an mpeg-2 that is not compliant i re encode.... it has only happened twice (they used 4:2:2 mpeg-2 which is nice... but not suported by myhardware)

and can you do me a small favore? can you encode your older videos with tmpgenc and include them for my archive? pretty please =^_^=

You bet. I will put that on my list of stuff to do and try to get them into my package for Expo.

That it is. :) For anyone who wants to know more, clicking on my sig banner leads to the "Chimera" Web site. There's a free download there; not the best song IMO, but it's not bad.

MPEG2? I could have SWORN it said MPEG1..*goes and rechecks*..ahh..ok..MPEG1 or MPEG2...*wipes away sweatdrop* Hopefully doing mine in MPEG1 won't cause major trouble with anything. I think my time at AWA will be devoted to figuring out just how to do the final encodes. I have the most trouble with that. And yes..I've read the guides, ect..and I still have trouble.

I don't think it will cause problems, but MPEG2 can make better looking video with the same file size, and is just generally a better format.

In the future, I would recommend submitting to cons in MPEG2 format, as long as they can take it. For this time, if your MPEG1 looks as good as you think it can, it shouldn't be a problem, unless I'm missing something, in which case Quu will tell me I'm an idiot and we're both horribly wrong and the world will end in a giant fireball...or somethin' like that......
