Haha, you obviously don't know me very well or that Canadian bastad either :-P

As am I...

>>RE: your rules

For the most part I agree with your rules except for slightly different things on numbers like 1 win, to say 2 wins. Also exceptions to things like AWA Expo and so on. However, it seems to be reasonable and in-line with what I think.

hackerzc wrote:That is all I have now. I am sure if I sat down with a few guys/girls we could seriously hammer out something worth wild that everyone would except.

The main problem as I stated above is that there can't be a clear-cut definition since everyone has different definitions based on when they feel they have received adequate recognition. Also contests are in charge of how they handle this as well.

Although I find your rules pretty fair and reasonable, who am I (or anyone else for that matter) to say when a video IS trolling (of course I can feel it is, but I mean like define it as a community decision). That's the inherent problem of this...err...problem.

hackerzc wrote:As far as the audiance is concerned, I currently don't do this for the audiance. I would like to think I do, but the truth of the matter is I do it for myself. I do it so I can sit back in a warm June day, hit the play button, sit back and enjoy something I CREATED.

Yeah that's how I feel as well. I like trying to re-create a vision in my head as accurately as possible...to see if I can do it. If people like it WHEE, if I win a contest WHEE, etc. I'd be lying if I said winning doesn't mean something, but at the same time...I'll live.

The problem I am having, as I stated above is that ALMOST EVERYONE says this and yet their behavior seems to suggest otherwise. Now as I said I can't say FOR SURE that someone IS trolling and whatnot, but to me personally it makes my opinion of others falter a bit.

In any case, I do applaud your efforts to consolidate this, but it's nearly impossible to DEFINE such rules for this situation and I hate to be the pessimist, but I only see it getting worse since well...I see no way to fix this.

Sadly the solution is just like wishing for "world peace." It basically comes down to creators respecting each other and their works and thinking about others before yourself. This is an inherent problem in any community and will continue so long as humans possess these traits (wanting recognition and winning) and so on.

Again I do applaud your try at it though.

yeah, that is what we've been doing, i know you understand this, but to anyone who doesnt i want to at least say we submitted thinking if we didnt break rules we were fine (this is before all of this). now back to you: we have withdrawn from a couple, and we will get to most of the others. we dont have that many opportunities to all be in the same room, and i have literally been busy every minute this week. i have been posting between studying sessions and in between actual test taking.

Don't feel the necessity to take videos out of contests because of what I feel or say. As I have said numerous times, this is a decision that should be made by yourself (or in your group) and how YOU feel about the video...does it deserve more recognition? Have you submitted to enough? What do I think of other's opinion of me? and so on.

Please don't just do something because people are angry. I'd much rather prefer it when someone does what they want and not be forced into something. I do however applaud that you are thinking about it.

One more thing, as you stated in your reply, no you're not breaking any rules and if this is sufficient justification for yourself, then there you go. Do that, it is YOUR decision, not ours. However, let me state the reason rules are not the only thing to consider (within the context of the community). Basicaly there are unsaid rules about trolling and contests that are just about respect and a fininte amount of recognition around. This is just something that is unsaid and it's preposterous for anyone to think you'd know this.

Regardless at least you know now and can think it through.

i would say we have all been more than a little bit influence by everyones thoughts on this issue. however, i think we are most influenced by the informative posts here rather than the angry ones. i think its been made pretty obvious that we were a bit uninformed lol. i suppose this is what i get for really only reading the anime forum for so long.

Well, I guess all I'm getting at is that I don't want you to feel forced into doing something. Your decisions to be just that...YOURS.

Regardless, I'm also glad to see that, for the most part, the replies have been fairly calm and not flamatory which in turns leads to results and understanding.

Glad I could help and I wish you luck on your future endeavors.

As a newbie to the amv community. This is a bit discouraging. But I have a belief that we should all do this for either fun, expressing ourselves and our love of anime.

As I sat and read this thread I realized that each and every person has a valid point.

This is such a gray issue that almost everyone is right. It is such an issue that no matter what happens with the rules and judging and submissions. Someone is eventually going to get pissed off. Thats life.

I personally have sent my last video into a lot of cons. Hell its my second video. I know it isn't going to win anything. But I want to try! And I'm helluah proud of all the veterans that do win time and time again with their vids. They deserve it.

I personally believe if you have one more than three or four awards. Back off let someone else have the spotlight. Sometimes this is just impossible. B/C of the deadlines on some cons.

Again.. I think everyone has made a valid point.. and in a way everyone is right. I agree with every statement in some way or another.

Like I said I'm a newbie. I don't know much about this. But like I said its SUCH a gray issue. Somebody in the end is going to end up pissed off. I say we leave it up to the people who head up the contest! And us ourselves have got to know when too much is just too much and its time to pass the glory to someone else.

What I'm about to say may sound very elitest...but its something I'm going to point out in plain site...since its a vibe I can feel as well.

The only people who seem to be complaining about trolling (minus a few individuals on the thread) are the ones who really don't seem to be winning any awards at all....or at least I've never heard of them winning recently.

$40 for a entrance fee and video?.....Yea fucking right! Some people can't afford to go to every CON they submit too.

Local creators to Local Cons only? Thats bullshit considering that fact that alot of people live away from these big cities and its difficult for them since they dont have any nearby CONs. Ushicon is my local con and those guys won't even add an AMV contest to the roaster.

Here is what I do and what I've always done....make new videos and send them to any CON as I please....but I ALWAYS submit to the Big CONs like Otakon and AWA....

Every Convention and its judges will always be different.....but a video that may win at Tekkoshocon may not in at AWA or Otakon. Every audience is new no matter what Convention you go to....

Just because AMV creators bitch about trolling doesn't mean the audience feels the same away about trolling....

Entertainment is Entertainment. Period!

Ok, again, if this sounds elitest then please forgive me. It is not my intention to sound this way but I'm just pointing out what I'm reading in plain site.

Bah, I already said that Mandy-chan!

"Basically what I am getting at is that no matter how much we discuss this, the decision ultimately occurs on the contest side and that of the creator. "

So i'm not the only one who was noticing this. I think if people put the effort that they spend complaining on making new amvs, then they'd be making some of the vids that wow and amaze an audience and are the envy of all new creators.

The $40 is just a number. It's more that the person would have to pay the membership fee for the convention they wish to submit to. They have to register for the convention, if they go or not is up to them.

As for Local creators for local cons, I believe strongly in this. AX, AWA, Otakon are sort of the Grand-masters and thus would be/and have been the contests for all creators to enter. However the other conventions, Fanime, Katsucon, Jacon, etc... should be for the Local creators.

Let me define what I mean by 'local' creator.

The convention is the closest to your home.
It's within 6 or so hours to your home by driving.
Your a 'local' creator if your attending the convention.

For those without a convention near by (more then 6 hours). They still have 3 conventions (AX, AWA, and Otakon) to submit to for competetion. If they want to submit to more, they can submit as Exhibition. Or simply talk to the AMV coordinator.

Sorry to say that your argument does not hold any water. You don't know it, but this conversation been carried acress 3 topics, and a mailing list. There are quite literally dozons upon dozons of people invloved in it. Every one from Vlad to yourselves.

Because I understand what you are implying. You'r trying to make the point that only people who don't win are bitching, you were just afraid to come out and say it.

It's more like the only ones NOT bitching are those that troll or want to be able to. And since everyone had expressed some kind of opinion saying trolling is wrong, I quess we are all loosers or soemthing.

That's kinda of an odd definition....I drove to AX last year which was a good 13hrs from where I live....that doesn't make me local to it.

I went to AWA which is 12 hrs away from Austin...that doesnt make a me a local creator....

I know people who have flown from LA to Atlanta or Atlanta to La for AX and AWA....that doesn't make them local creators.

Sorry Anneke, no hard feelings about this....jsut pointing out why I dont agree with ur definition :D

I think you need to calm down, because obviously you feel passionately about this topic. First of all, I was not complaining about trolling. Frankly, I'd be happy to be competing against this infamous Yatta vid at Otakon this year. I don't personally see the need to make a tone down a competition to "give local creators a chance". Many of us are having a conversation about what defines trolling and that moved onto multiple discussions about ways to hopefully prevent it. Some individuals seem to have a vehement opposition to any form of trolling, and want to instate all sorts of rules and conventions about how to prevent this from ever happening. I just get an impression(from some of the statements that I've seen) that if these individuals were on the flip side and had submitted a vid to many cons and had it do well, that these individuals would want to bask in that glory for as long as possible. Course I could just be hallucinating.

Then again, I should take my own advice and go back to editing rather than ranting on various public forums.

If your attending the convention your a 'local' creator. Your Local in that your at the convention. If you attend the convention your ofcourse allowed to enter the contest. I'm saying if you don't attend the convention, then you could still enter it, for the other reasons. I'm trying to take into account the poor college students who can't even travel to the nearest convention. If it's their nearest convention, they should be able to enter it, regardless of if they can attend.
