Otakon 2003: Sizing up the Competition...

Postby iserlohn » Wed Jun 04, 2003 1:55 pm

Aiight, it's that time again. The deadlines are past, time to fess up:

1)Did you enter Otakon 2003?
2)Which category?
3)How many submissions do you think Otakon received this year?

In order to keep surprises for prescreenings, please don't say what your video is/what you did/etc. The person who comes closest to the actual number of videos submitted to Otakon without going over (like on the price is right) will get a real review out of me for their video (once it's online), two closest followups will get free star reviews.

As far as my info:
1)Yes
2)Upbeat/Rhythm/Fun
3)145

1. Yes
2. Upbeat/Rhythm
3. 169

So far, you'd think that the contest was going to be heavily Upbeat/Rhythm... but I'd almost bet that we represent about a quarter or so of the total entries to the category, even with the high number of entries. :?

I'd add another onto the poll, but the answer is probably going to be too obvious: Which category is going to get the most entries this year.

Almost certain answer: Drama

Drama always gets the most entries at Otakon, and usually takes up about half the final playlist. My video COULD have been sent in as drama (I was originally planning to send it in as such), but everyone kept telling me it was "fun" so into cat. 4 it went...

1. Yes
2. I think I told them to put it where the like. It's either Action or Drama?
3. 222

Yeah, I'd have to say that I'm not sure if I should've put mine into Parody. I tried really hard to take all of the common gripes about amvs to make a truly sucky vid. But we'll see what the prescreening crowd decides...

Well... Otakon 2K1 got 137 entries, but Otakon 2K2 only got just under 100 entries... I'm sure one of the reasons entries went down was the sheer number of disappointments. With 137 entries, and only 38 making it into the contest, that's a lot of people who didn't get it, a lot of which probably didn't submit the next year because of it.

However, this year, the entry process was made even simpler with Quu's digital handling and the ability to upload videos. This upload option probably contributed a BUNCH of videos that otherwise might not have been submitted.

Therefore...

1) Yes, I submitted.
2) Drama / Serious
3) (from the above math)... I'm going to say that this year we get even more than Otakon 2K1... I'll say we get about 150 entries. Hopefully the trolling will be at a minimum... don't want another case of the same videos being at every con on the east coast :/

Otakon's such a big contest that's done so much for the community, I wish more people would see it as something to make a brand-new video for, one that debuts JUST at Otakon (or at least, not have been at three cons before showing up there).

Anyway, that's just a personal preference from someone who's been enjoying Otakon's contest above all others for a fourth year, now :D.

I think that another part of the decline in the number of entries for Otakon 2K2 was the fact that Matt said that he wasn't going to be making dubs of the contest for all submitters. Only the ones that made it into the contest got such dubs... Course my vid got in the contest last year, and I still have yet to recieve said dub of the contest. *playfully glares at Matt*

Hmm....

1. I did submit a video.
2. I let them choose. (Probably Action?)
3. Maybe... 142?

Mine could have gone into Comedy/Parody as well, but its humor is not so much overt as what I would consider a comedy video (had I entered Dai-Osaka Rap, it would have gone into comedy/parody), and it is upbeat/rhythm-ish. But, as you've pointed out, the prescreeners could decide it belongs elsewhere.

The funny thing is Bogo- people seem to love it when we intentionally make bad videos. It's quite amusing actually.

I think the number is going to be a good bit higher than last year's, if simply from Quu's boggling over the number of submissions he got for the con. Add onto that the fact I know a number of people prefer to send things in on hard media, and I think it'll be a doozy of a time at prescreenings :P

1) Yes
2) Drama/Romance (since there are two right?)
3) 178

Reason it's a bit higher being...online submission through FTP.

Good luck to everyone!

Maybe you weren't perverse enough in your creation of a bad video, and didn't actually cause people pain. Apparently there are so many masochists in the world....

Oh is there a rule about this like X cons or Y awards? I haven't won anything with it, but it did Premiere at another con. I basically submitted to Otakon since I'm going to be in attendence and well...I like seeing my vids on the big screen. It was too difficult to create a video *for* this contest since it premiered at a con two weeks prior to the deadline...couldn't really make something new by then...if it's trolling or breaking a rule...I'm sorry. I did read them and am FAIRLY sure I am alright though.
