2nd Annual A-kon Summer AMV Blockbuster Review

Post by rurouni_trelane » Tue May 27, 2003 10:26 am

For all those entering videos in the A-kon Music Video Contest, I will be posting my 2nd Annual A-kon Summer AMV Blockbuster Review as soon as I get back from the convention. For those unfamiliar with last year's madness, it's basically an unbiased and blatantly honest review of every AMV being played (except mine, since I'm entering this year). So I don't wanna hear any more whining and complaining this year about "how could you say such things about my video?! I worked XXX hours on it!" Frankly, that doesn't matter to me; I pull no punches with this one.
And if I get cussed out again, someone's gonna get dropped on their head, ya get me?

Ok, here's the reviews I promised. Remember, I pull no punches, so if you don't like what I said about your vid, too bad, I calls 'em as I sees 'em.

X - Wonderboy
Good concept, and the music somehow fits the show.... The editing is good, and the words fit the scenes nicely. The only problem is the lack of motion from scene to scene, but overall a good video. Plus if you know the show, it's pretty funny. Download it, and keep it if you like Tenacious D or X. (Tenacious X? Hmmm?)

Nocturnal - Vampire Hunter Bloodlust
This one has even less motion from scene to scene than the previous (by the same AMV artist). Overall, not bad, and the editing quality is good, but it just lacks any... staying power. Worth watching maybe once.

Appetite for Dynamite - Cowboy Bebop
The sound bug strikes again! Despite that, I can still tell that the video is quite good. The explosions are timed well, and the editing is seamless. Overall, it pretty much gets across the feeling it's trying to portray. The strip section in the middle seems a bit contrived though... especially when we can't tell what it's supposed to be.

Buddah for Mary - Armitage
More sound bugginess. Poor Milo. It's really a shame for this song too, because the contrast between sections of the song is lost, when the volume is capped like that. Again, kudos to Milo for a vid that really gets across the feeling of the music. The editing is great, and the timings are very nice.

Without Me - GTO
This deserves the WTF award for the con. That's not to say it's a bad thing... Definitely a very funny video. Download this one first chance you get. The timings are great, the editing and the added materials are great. Laughed my ass off.

Now You're a Man - Goldenboy
A great idea that could have been done better, I'm afraid. A tip: don't use lip motion unless it's synced. I realize I break this in my vid, but there's a reason, so unless you have one, don't do it. Also a lot more scene changes would have been better. Thumbs down.

Chobits- Name
A good download if you like Chobits, but otherwise, I'm not so sure. It gets across the idea of the music well, but the editing and timings could have been quite a bit better. A few crossfades could have easily made this video much better, as it just jumps from scene to scene ungracefully. Eh.

Everywhere I Go - OMG Movie
Five Iron Frenzy! Been a long time since I've heard this band. Not a bad vid, but I'm not so sure that fast ska fits OMG. It's not badly done or anything.... the music just doesn't match the anime. The music calls for scene changes that are too fast and too frequent for this show to handle. The result is a sub-par video.

A Thousand Miles - Ai Yori Aoshi
First: the video washes out too easily. You might want to re-encode it to be a little less bright. That being said, for the most part, the music matches the scenes, and the timings are good. It's hard to tell if the lips match, though, due to the washed out faces. In either case, there are some very nice moments in this one. The piano and voice only section near the end is golden. Worth the download if you know this show.

Chop Suey! - Vandread
Audio is way too soft, and I don't think it's the audio bug. Re-encode this one with higher-quality audio. On top of that, this seems to be a case of "I love this song, I love this anime, let's put them together irregardless of whether it works." Because, unfortunately, it doesn't. The scenes don't really match the music most of the time, and a lot of great potential timing moments are just ignored. I wouldn't bother shaking my fist at this one, much less downloading it.

Creep - FLCL
I always wondered what the name of this song was.... no I know. Some good timings in this one overall, but the feeling of the music tends to be sacrificed in favor of matching the words to the scene. Most of this song is slow and easy, but has fast moving and comedic scenes over it. In contrast, however, the Canti taking off scene is really done well, that matches the music perfectly. The Canti pooping scene is waaay off, however. The audience didn?t like that bit.

TEOTWAWKI - Excel Saga
Lots of audience props. The video quality is pretty bad... but the vid itself is good. The timings aren't bad, and there's a lot of funny moments in it. Just improve the video quality and it'll be perfect.

Thunder and Lightning - Fruits Basket
Classical music AMVs are always good! And this one is no exception. The timings are great, and there's a lot of funny moments. Not as good as Brad DeMoss?s Caffiene Encopium, but still good. Download now.

Careless Whisper - Space Adventure Cobra
I remember this song! Ah , the 80s, I miss you so, but there's a reason you got left behind (and there?s more than one reason George Michael got left behind). I'm not sure I wanted to hear this song again... And besides, slow 80s ballads with sax solos don't really need a fight scene going over the chorus. A lot of times, the scenes just don't match the music. It talks about dancing a lot, but there's not any dancing in the anime. Overall, not a bad video; there's some good moments, but the subject matter (the old music and the old anime) only appeals to a certain audience; download if you love the song or know the anime.

Yatta! ? various WINNER ? Fan Favorite
Arguably the best video shown so far. Laugh out loud funny. Bus bus bus bus! There?s nothing wrong with it at all. Perfect. Download now.

Superman ? Trigun TIED ? Best Artistic
No, this isn't 3 Doors Down, and it's not the Man of Steel either. But this is definitely a ?cry for Vash? video. It's very sad, and very well done. If you like Trigun in the slightest, download this one. If you're a Vash fan, though, have a box of kleenex handy.

Where the Wild Roses Grow - Utena
I'm not sure what to say about this one... It's good, don't get me wrong. But Touga's lip syncing with such a deep voice is... disturbing. Overall, though, the spirit of the music is communicated well by the scenes. The editing and timings are done well. Download and keep if you like Utena.

Hindi Sad Diamonds - OMG Movie
Runner-up for the WTF Award. Indian techno over OMG? Strangely enough, it works. The video quality is flawless, and the timings are great. Download and keep this one, and remember to nominate it for the AMV Awards next year.

Come Along - Wolf's Rain
I'm not sure how to look at this one, since I don't know the song or the anime. So I'm going to judge by the impression I got. The music matches the scenes well, and I *think* the spirit of the music is communicated... it's kind of hard to tell. It's made well, though; download, watch, and enjoy, and keep it if you like it.

Seasons in the Sun - Grave of the Fireflies
MJ did a GotF video? The whole time I was expecting some quick frames of hentai to pop in unexpectedly... This video was done well, aside from the frequent scene changes. The music really matches the scenes, and points out the more positive parts of this movie, which apparently people thought was mocking the movie. Oh, MJ, will you ever win?

I Know What Boys Like - Pretty Sammy
MJ's little girl fetish comes through... Ironic that this song was made into an AMV by a large bearded single man. All good-natured ribbing aside, this is a great video. It's really made well, and is pretty funny. The lip syncing and other timings are done really well. Download and keep if you think Sasami is hot; otherwise, download and keep anyway to laugh at with your friends.

The Girl All the Bad Guys Want - Various
Ok, first off. That's not lip-syncing. Go for precision, man. Not a bad video, with some funny stuff. Worth the download to see it, but don't feel obliged to keep it; it's a good idea that could have been done better.

Departure - X TV
This is Kenshin BG music, if you didn't recognize it. The timings are done really well, and the music and scenes go really well together. Overall, very polished and very nice. Download and keep if you like X, otherwise download and enjoy.

Phenomenon - Princess Nine
Despite the fact that I don't know the anime of the music, I really like this video. The use of the rectangles is well done, and a nice unique touch. The timings are done well, and somehow heavy metal seems to go with baseball anime. Very well done, download and enjoy.

Like a Virgin - Love Hina
Yes, you read that right. Be afraid, be very afraid? Not afraid enough? It has doujinshi stills. I knew Love Hina was a very sex-related show, but I didn't realize just how much until I saw this video. Aside from the douinshi and the frequent flashes, it's a good video, and worth the download for the sheer laugh factor.

My Funny Valentine - Cowboy Bebop WINNER ? Judge?s Choice and TIED ? Best Artistic
Yes, the pun is intentional. I think Carlos has a Faye fetish. This is a great video; there's really nothing I'd change at all. Download and keep.

Sugar Sugar - Steel Angel Kurumi
I already have this one saved on my computer before the convention. If you like shoujo ai at all, download and keep. Audience claps on the beat of the song. Too cute for words.

Big audience pops for my vid! Woah...
They cut my second vid! Bastards...

Cracked Science - Initial D WINNER ? Best Technical
I get the feeling I'm either watching a car commercial or at a rave. What is this song from??? Can't remember... The effects are great, masterfully done. The editing is seamless. The only potentially bad thing about this vid is the length and the cars... all the cars...

Your Earth - Various
Ok, this vid kinda freaked me out. It's a trip in AMV form. The use of Black Heaven is nice, but on the whole, I was unsure what was I was supposed to be feeling throughout the vid.
Well done, with great editing, but not necessarily enjoyable.

Talking Heads - FLCL
Gah, didn't catch the title of this one. Sound bug! Or just too soft, consider re-encoding with better sound quality. Kind of a mediocre video; the timings need work, and the whole things is just kind of... bleh.

/me realizes the contest is only half over and I've undertaken quite a task in reviewing every video... my butt's getting sore.

Video Killed the Radio Star - Gravitation
Oh god. Shounen ai. My butt really hurts now... The editing isn't bad, and the music sorta matches the scenes (most of the scenes nothing to do with radio). The lip syncing is a little overdone, but still fun to watch, as disturbing as it is.

Ayla Pt. 2 - Tokyo Babylon
Trance and Tokyo Babylon. Hmm. Well, it's well done, but it's nothing to shout about... The editing is great and the timings are all right, but it's just trance music to lots of images of birds and people dying. I'm sure it'd be more enjoyable if I knew the anime... so if you do, try it.

Carnival Babel - Yu Yu Hakusho / Memories
Reservoir Dogs flashbacks at the beginning... Magnetic Rose! The editing in of Yusuke and his bunch are seamlessly done, except Hie's sword draws blood from stone statues... Everything else is perfect, though. Download and keep if you know Memories. Otherwise, download it and use it as an example of seamless character add-ins.

Underground - Cowboy Bebop
Another Spike vs. someone video, this time with the Mad Pierrot. The timings need some work; don't be afraid to clip the scenes short in order for the scenes to change with the phrases of the music.

Flagpole Sitta - Escaflowne
A vid featuring the crazy guy from Escaflowne. And boy is he nutz! A good video with good editing and timings. Download and keep if you like Escaflowne.

House of the Rising Sun - Excel Saga
Oh that's too good. Poor poor Pedro. Gah! The audio bug strikes again! If you love Pedro, and who doesn't, download this one.

Ok, really getting tempted to leave... butt hurts so bad...

Differences - OMG
Another OMG video? Oh well, it looks good, I'll watch. WOW. Glad I stayed. A great romance video. Download and keep it if you like sappy stuff.

Do You Realize? - End of Evangelion
"Do you realize you have the most beautiful face?" What does that have to do with Eva?? Eh, it's an ok video; the zoom motion starts to get old reeeal fast. The music doesn't really match the anime, so the effect is kinda dull. Another Eva vid. Download if you're collecting them for some reason.

Orgasm Addict - Colorful
Ooooooookay... shouldn't this be in Hentaifest? Slightly funny, but once you get over the novelty, there's not much left to it besides exposed women. Which is good! Don't get me wrong. So download if you like that kind of thing. Or download actual porn instead.

Sin City - various
It's a sin to have to sit through all these videos. Good thing this is an excellent video. The timings are great, and the overall effect is very cool. The use of speed really keeps this one going, kind of like a trance version of Odorikuruu. Download and keep.

What? It?s over? Thank GOD! Not that it wasn?t enjoyable, but that?s a lot of sitting-on-ass time, and about half of that was through some painful vids. Still, I thought there was a higher ratio of good vids this time around. My sources tell me that they received over 6 hours of videos for this contest, and had to sort through them all. If there was a video even close to being over 5 minutes, FFTT! It?s out. If the source footage was from anything over than anime, i.e. Final Fantasy or other video games, FFTT! It?s out. I also hear that one video went for over 9 minutes, and was dropped immediately, and that the Pink Floyd video that was submitted was the most painful of all. In either case, a good contest, despite the AMV Panel/Awards confusion. Kudos!

Thank yas. :D

The Hiei scene was a bit difficult to edit since the original scene had Hiei just totally splattering mud-guy-guts everywhere. The crowd went pretty wild when Hiei started cutting up the statues which makes me regret not putting more of him in the video. :(
