AWA pro thoughts/followups?

Well that ruins my master plans for ending masters next year... no hentai in pro

Wait, I have an 18+ rule and a no Hentai rule? I think I broke something there. Let me dwell on this. Please discuss.

IIRC, previous discussions on the topic (2009-2011) indicated that even without an explicit rule banning it, there's a general sentiment that it would be seen as a troll entry and wouldn't win even if it was the best entry in the contest, so it's not worth it to bother.

That was regarding a personal preference on the part of the judge for said award. That's not to say it can't win, just that the odds are stacked against it. That said I vividly recall a video that was themed "adult" by awa last year but was so masterfully made and told such a touching story that I think EVERYONE needs to see it.


It's a total possibility to tell a really amazing story with hentai. Just because most h-videos are really poorly made with really bad puns as the premise, that does not have to be the case. I would even go so far to declare MJ's a girl with pretty eyes The Animation a very well built video. It uses a number of elements that comprise a good video despite having a rather humorous theme. While TGTA isn't in my mind a master quality entry, I would have no problem with Jingoro giving Jus Talionis a jacket if it were eligible. Don't discount a source, there are a lot of people in the community that have used odd sources to tell amazing tales. That's my honest input.

I stand with Mr. Pilkington on this one. I want our contests to support artistic expression, including that which I could not screen in Main Events or even the general VAT. Though I've already admitted that a prurient video would have the cards stacked against it in a contest such as Masters, I can easily imagine one so technically flawless and artistically compelling that it could, in fact, win.

Any restriction on Pro was, to my recollection, because of a significant contingent not wanting to watch such things (which I understand as well) and a perception that if you were in Pro you were obligated to do so (which I vehemently disagreed with at the time). Unable to remove the peer pressure of that obligation, I seem to recall bumping such things to Expo, and then handing them straight off to the team that ran the adult block... a contingent I'll note that watches far more of this stuff than I or my general staff do and who were much better equipped to review such things and award prizes accordingly.

Topic is still open, folks. This is one of those unintended consequences of the Pro change.

I think that a "no hentai" rule is a little too broad. I think that a "no pornography" rule would be more suitable. doesn't actually have any hentai in it, but it does have a "mature" theme. Thus, a rule that allows 18+ videos is necessary. But I don't feel that actually has pornography in it (especially since even though the video was edited to portray rape, the scene doesn't actually exists in any of the sources)

I think that (coincidentally by the same editors) is a better example of using hentai/ yuri to tell a story and be a entertaining video. But just as in the case of , the scenes that portray sex were handled "tactfully" enough to avoid being classified as a hentai video (even though it is definitely 18+)

I am only open to getting rid of a "no hentai" rule if it is replaced by a rule that prevents people from submitting outright pornography. I know plenty of underage editors that are far more talented than myself, and it would be unfortunate to have rules in place that would prevent them from participating in Pro and Masters.

I don't really like Masters being chosen from the Pro pool of videos. I would rather make a new video for both contests...

you can still pretty much do this since Masters will now be accepting 2 possible entries. This is definitely the most flexible compromise to the exclusive rule.

Then I would prefer to make 3 new videos, one for master and two for pro

I find this statement rather hilarious. Especially considering you've consistently entered videos that were very obviously premiered before AWA pro, nevermind the fact that they'd won multiple awards before AWA.
