I know for the secons showing, the Audio engineer adjusted each video... Overall and based on a LOT of othwer main events rooms. the audio was actually very clean! So you all are pretty lucky.. At some cons, the audio is set for rock banks with way too much base so you can't hear the lyrics...

As for the messup for my videos, honestly, it was three small studders and that's all... Troy did ask if I wanted to play it again at the end, but I said I was fine with it... Now it would of been intresting to find out how will it would of done if not taken out of the finals  But then again it ment someone else got in so it was all good in the end :D

I don't think Troy did it, since I didn't hear normalization on some other tracks, but there were some specific ones that did. (I was at the contest and the reshowing, I heard it on both showings)

Did anyone else catch it? or am I just crazy?

i DID notice that. Yue's Dreamer in particular, both during the contest and rescreen.

I noticed that with Yue's vid especially, and at first I wondered if I accidentally spiked the gain at the end. I checked, and I hadn't. I inquired with Yue about it and it was in her source. I was half tempted to try correcting it, but didn't have the time, plus it's a veerrrrry fine line to cross (not to mention this is Yue we're talking about, god help me if I tinker with one of her vids).

Hmm. That's a good topic to dwell on for a second. What's everyone's thoughts? On one hand, there's the ideology that vids should be shown exactly as the creator sent them. On the other hand, there's the ideology that a coordinator should try to correct simple mistakes such as aspect ratios and gain issues because generally everyone points the blame at the con and the coordinator if something isn't quite right.

I like Vicbond007's saying: "I can't make bad look good, but I can make good look right." I decided this year that I would do the same. There was a lot of aspect ratio corrections done this year, for example. I do intend, however, to revamp the judging system to give a tiny penalty to vids that I have to make You-Should-Know-Better corrections to.

Audio-wise, I don't know very much about it, but it always is very distracting during a screening to hear very obvious differences between the audio tracks. Obviously you have to work with what you get, but if you've got five videos out of 35 which just need manual or on-the-fly audio adjustment to sound more like the rest, and one of those videos was mine, I'd definitely want it to be adjusted. I want my AMV to sound as good as possible.

Does the .org even have any guides for prepping audio for contest screenings, similar to Scintilla's older guide for MPEGs? It would be great if that were in the official guides area or stickied, if there is something lurking around in the forums.

... you mean AX's ballots did not already contain that information in previous years?

I missed last years contest so I don't know if it was implimented then, but in '09 and '10 I believe all we got on the ballots were AMV titles and maybe creator, but definitely not source anime and song.

Also, forgot to add a moment of silence for the AMTV-Pro category. Does this mean that we are getting a new category to replace it, or more finalists into Comedy and Fun? Or...?

I think it's important to maintain the same average volume across all of the videos, but you shouldn't make any more significant edits to the soundtrack of an individual video than uniformly raising or lowering the volume. If you have to adust the volume of sections of the video, you're modifying the creator's work too much; if they horribly unbalanced the soundtrack, that's their fault and should count against them. Automated volume leveling is usually a disaster. Ever watched an action movie in "night" mode and had trouble hearing the gunshots while the dialog is overly loud? Staff shouldn't be adusting the volume of the videos on the fly, but I don't know if you can get around that.

I'd be upset if I had to watch a video in the wrong aspect ratio at the contest, but editors should know better than to stretch fullscreen into widescreen or vice-versa.

It might be good to include examples of correct and incorrect aspect ratio in the official rules PDF. One thing I would like to say is if you are going to mark people down for such issues, please do not post different rules on these forums than in the official rules next year. The official rules PDF was never updated with the correct mailing address, and only mentions "the following NTSC Standards; 480p, 480i, 720p, 720i, 1080p or 1080i resolutions", while you posted specific pixel dimensions on these forums (also note that 720 and 1080 resolutions are HD standards, not NTSC standards). The official rules also state that only PCM uncompressed audio is accepted, but I know AAC is accepted and I expect other formats are accepted as well. I got the impression DP leaving might have been the cause of the discrepancy in rules this year, and if that's the case it's understandable, but not everyone is going to expect to have to go to a third-party forum to find the most current rules.

For AX2010 you got blank scraps of paper. I remember that well because two hours before the competition there was a heated discussion about what to do about the lack of ballots, and I proposed that as the only solution realistically possible on such incredibly short notice.

Also, forgot to add a moment of silence for the AMTV-Pro category. Does this mean that we are getting a new category to replace it, or more finalists into Comedy and Fun? Or...?

Actually, I'm writing up 2013's rules and hashing out the new categories as we speak.

As for the categories, I'll be honest in saying that I find myself taking a lot of inspiration from Otakon's category structure. Much as I'd very much prefer to not be a copycat, they pretty much cover most of the bases quite well. Credit where credit's due.

One thing I will announce right now is this: For AX2013 there will be an 18-month freshness rule. This means that any AMVs released prior to January 1st, 2012 will be ineligible to participate. Also, for AX2014 it is very likely that it will be further revised to a 12-month freshness rule.

For the most part, the rules we went by this year were more or less DP's original rules. All I did was make a post on this thread which parsed them in a way that was more easily readable, though there were some rules elements that I relaxed as issues were brought to my attention.

In any case, I'll be privately sending betas of my in-progress rules to various people for comment and feedback. Once they're finalized and posted (hopefully around December or January), they're solid.

Seriously. I got misty eyed each time I watched it, and I've had to watch it several times. :)

You know Vlad's Circle of Life video? That played back to back with a Grave of the Fireflies video one year. That had me crying in that combo
