Sure enough, Vlad's vid glitched, and I apologized to him profusely (since he was right in front of me when it happened...) With that being the only visible glitch of the entire con insofar as AMV events was concerned (miraculously), Vlad just smiled and shrugged it off. :)

Which one didn't play? I definitely remember Sweep, Undead, and Gemini playing. I actually wasn't sure about Pheonix, but Rider just said that played, unless that was a joke and I'm missing something. :?

Oh, I meant to say, this year had the fewest entries that I felt were miscategorized or didn't belong in the show of any year I've been to, and that was very pleasing.

Maybe Starcraft didn't play. I have it written down from the first night but now that I think about it I don't remember seeing it at the rescreen. That would be the fourth block, though. If so, sorry about that Kazemon, that was one of my favs from the preshow. If it helps, the volume got turned down during my video both times.

Actually, that just made everything worse for everyone, didn't it...

Sorry about that. Vlad and I had a chat with the audio guy soon as we noticed it. Which one was yours, by the way?

Also, I apologize for any vids that got omitted from the pre-show rescreen. As I check things over I have a feeling I might have missed Nic's vid too.

In any case, to save me from having to do at-con renders I won't be rendering the pre-shows out to those large blocks like I did this year. It added a few degrees of complexities that I shouldn't have. It all worked out in the end, but massively slowed things down on the preparation end of things (Vlad and I averaged about 4hrs sleep per night at con). Meh... first time lessons and all that.

xstylus looks like you have joined a VERY exclusive club with only 1 other member to my knowledge (me): Those who have screwed up 1 of Vlad's videos
Im pretty sure it wasnt something too bad that caused the glitch, things just happen at times

xstylus: When you made the phone call you had me working to prevent from laughing too hard.
2011 I had an entrant decide to not show up the last day saying his video wasnt gonna win anything. Well the best in show was playing and his friend was on the way up to the room and heard the video and came running in just as I was calling for the winner

his friend said the winner pussed out and went home and asked if I wanted him to make a call and I said yes and yeah, speaker phone plus mic is a VERY fun combo

Overall, it was a great contest this year. It's been one of the betters for me at AX in terms of AMVs. As Iron Chef and Vlad's AMV Block went extremely well, I thoroughly enjoyed both those events. The second AMV viewing was just as good as the first (probably better due to the setup Concourse), since it was an incredibly packed room. I constantly looked back and the whole room was filled up. Not just the concourse, just about every single AMV event was packed.

Drama did an excellent job this year, thanks to Melichan's video, which really hit me the second time around that I saw it. I wanted to push that video for Best in Show. However since I was distracted a bit the first time around with my phone I didn't make the proper vote :P. I cannot wait till next year, great job to everyone that submitted along with Troy and Vlad's coordination with the contest.

@The Wired Knight: I seriously thought you had one of the most interesting panels in AX, I came in expecting something else completely different. I wish you had extra time because that was extremely viable information that you put out there. I still have the handout and I'm constantly looking it over.

A little off topic, but it felt to me some of the audio tracks in the AMV contest were NORMALIZED??
I don't think Troy did it, since I didn't hear normalization on some other tracks, but there were some specific ones that did. (I was at the contest and the reshowing, I heard it on both showings)

Did anyone else catch it? or am I just crazy?

Someone definitely played with the audio settings on my video in AMTV-Pro, during the first screening. The volume was lowered during the portion where my video got really loud.

As I was doing the compile, I did try to make adjustments. Most entries rode the red. If they clipped, I dropped them until they no longer did (usually -0.2db, -0.5db max). For quieter entries I boosted the gain until just shy of peak. One entry got the maximum +6db boost and still could've used more.

I didn't make any adjustments to the audio of the pre-show entries due to lack of time.

I'm generally touchy on messing with audio. It's been my experience that people are less forgiving of audio issues than video issues.

It was left to the audio engineer's judgement to adjust the volume as needed, since the volume of the entries varied from video to video.

I do know that for the main competition the engineer aimed to set a fairly loud level and would adjust on the fly for each entry. If your video started quiet, the engineer likely punched it up accordingly, assuming that would be the level for the entire vid. When your video got loud, the engineer then likely had to make a correction. Kinda hard to plan that without advance notice.

I agree. Better to not blow out the audiences ears and actually get a formal complaint than to just lower the volume and 'maybe' lose out on some dramatic effect.
