Okay, here's what I think of your videos, these are based on skipping through and spending about 20 seconds or less per amv:

1. I don't know who this Carl Sagan guy is but he's a terrible singer. I think he'd be better off doing educational films or something about the cosmos. 3/5

2. This is the kind of amv one should show in a sex ed class showing that if you get a girl teen pregnant you don't have to falcon punch her. 3/5

3. That liberi fatali text video pales in comparison to this. Mucho props to the person who mastered the effects program to create this. But I hate reading so 3/5

4. Ah highway to the danger zone, brings back memories to when we were doing flag and rifle tossing back when I was in MCJROTC in highschool. Plus this amv had plenty of background shots of Derpy Hooves. Good high quality too, thankfully its easy to rip footage from youtube. The video also does a very good job portraying our favorite yuri pony. Sadly, it falls short from lack of pony yiffing. 3/5

5. Yay! Someone figured out how to use AfterEffects and do a picture montage. Need more lens flare! 3/5

6. What the hell! Hentai anime with no hentai? I can't fap to this. 3/5

7. I saw butts and lolis in an amv about sexting, I need to go wash now 3/5

8. Another PMV, this one was a lot more actiony than the first one. Plus I liked the pony-orgy at the end. Needs more Derpy Hooves though, 3/5

9. I got 4 words to describe this video: Running Falling Singing Flying 3/5

10. The Animatrix was soooooo early 2000's I'll admit that a montage of the entire film is better than just focusing on one of the shorts. And did I see Jem in there somewhere? 3/5

11. Party, Party, Party, I want to stab my eardrums, Party, Party, Party, this amv has no Derpy Hooves. 3/5

12. Hmmmm metal + highschool girls + guns + long drawn out fights, I think there's one of these every year 3/5

13. I died a little on the inside after watching this amv. But that's good because its always been my dream to become a zombie. Thank you for getting me a little closer to my goal 3/5

14. A tribute amv to Satoshi Kon, nice slow depressing song, and it matched a lot of the scenes used in the amv. 3/5

15. Hasa Diga Piece of Crap. Why do you people edit to old anime when there are much better shows out now. 3/5

16. Kung fu panda and no villiage people? Aw man... 3/5

17. I realized something while watching this, and that is I have a hard time thinking about way to comment on action videos. Maybe it's because they all look the same to me? I dunno but here is another typical action video, fasy paced editing, some use of effects and all out fighting. 3/5

18. This pony video had Derpy Hooves in it, therefore I didn't turn it off immediately. But a To use a Kanye West song and make no references to Beyonce or Gay Fish... 3/5

19. Dwayne and Brand-o did a better job of making a Final Fantasy based music video, plus they wrote their own music. I think this contest would be a lot more interesting if people would perform their own songs. 3/5

20. This video needs a BRD, or Doctor Tran for some hot dickings. 3/5

21. Weee another action video with fast cuts and violence 3/5

22. That purple spawn of cthulhu needs to be scourged from the face of the planet. I still have nightmares... 3/5

23. I honestly believe they keep remastering/remaking/releasing Evangelion because they want to make sure there's always a large staple of eva amvs at every convention. 3/5

24. Blow me away this video did not. 3/5

25. I can certainly see the appeal to this amv. From what I could tell this stalker chick is chasing this guy all over the planet. You know what they say, restraining orders are just another way of saying "I love you." 3/5

26. For some reason the melody in this amv made me want to play an old JRPG game. Kudos to the musician for good use of Microsoft Songsmith 3/5

27. The only winning move is not to watch this amv. 3/5

28. Good use of HUD overlay and masks, unfortunatly that's about the only thing that sets it apart form the other action videos I've seen thus far. 3/5

29. Do all action videos speed up their footage by 200%? 3/5

30. When Nichijou gets released in the US, it will be Azumanga Daioh amvs all over again. 3/5

31. At first i thought I was listening to AC/DC the only thing worse than AC/DC is a band that sounds like AC/DC. 3/5

32. Noein is a very under appreciated show. Sadly this video does nothing in making more people want to go watch it. 3/5

33. I got very excited when I skipped to the part that said DMC thinking maybe it was a Detroit Metal City amv but it's just a montage of game footage. Spoiler Alert: PEOPLE STAB THINGS IN IT. 3/5

34. Linkin park? I really was waiting for this video to end. And something is wrong with your color, half the video as black and white. 3/5

35. Borderlands the AMV with a touch of Red Dead Redemption. Plus a lot of dead bodies. I think this video might give Satan nightmares. 3/5

36. See amv #21 3/5

37. This video took longer than 20 seconds to get started, so you know what 3/5

38. This video is how I envision the world will be one day, with people getting eaten by flying bat monsters and tentacle porned to death, all while being forced to participate in a global rave dance off. 3/5

39. A Final Fantasy 8 video where the ripped footage isn't pixelated to shit? YOU MUST TELL ME HOW YOU DID THIS. 3/5

40. Unfortunately, not in Pro, 3/5

41. Turn off the radio, trash your stereo. AND YOUR SONG HAS THE N WORD IN IT! 3/5

42. The happy touchy feely tone to this video really makes me want to club a burlap sack full of nyan-cats until I have pop-tart jelly. 3/5

43. Just because you think you can win by using godix's picture in the amv doesn't mean you will. Instead it makes you a fucking tool. 3/5

44. This amv is clearly false advertising, there is not one beard in this amv that I could see. 3/5

45. Alright so you made a trailer to the movie. Didn't this come out a while ago? 3/5

46. I find this video's lack of dinosaurs very disappointing. 3/5

47. The only memorable thing about this video was the clip where the girl was eating a page out of a book. well that was the only part I paid attention to. 3/5

48. A mythbusters video missing the most important myth of all. Unfortunatly due to the missing myth's x-ratedness I'll assume that's why it was left out. 3/5

49. I love the Lord of the Sharpie Marker. But again, OLD ANIME!! 3/5

50. Detective Conan, aka "The only series that never touches on what happened in the first chapter and probably won't until they decide to cancel it." 3/5

51. Yippie! ANOTHER PONY VIDEO what's this one make? 5? It's freakin hinako again from 2010. AND NO DERPY HOOVES TO BE FOUND. But I coulda missed her, can someone who actually watches all of these tell me if Derpy is in it? She's my bishy. 3/5

52. .... I'm not even going to try. 3/5

53. At least they didn't use the United States of Whatever. 3/5

54. Run from this town, and by town I mean Atlanta because that's what's going to happen when this one is played. 3/5

55. This video is reminiscent of the time I fought mike tyson in punch out. 3 seconds and it was lights out. 3/5

56. See video #36 3/5

57. Words cannot describe this amv. Clearly the best one in this year's whole mix. Honestly though, you should watch this amv and take a lesson from it. This is HOW YOU MAKE AN AMV. The editing, effects, timing and source were all of the highest quality, WHY DID YOU NOT ENTER THIS ONE INTO MASTERS. The rest of the videos make me want to vomit when comparing them to this one. I'm being totally serious here. This video doesn't leave you speechless, instead it gives you so many positive things to say that there is no sheet of papyrus large enough to convey its true beauty. 5/5

Okay, that sums up my review of all your garbage. I have to say it's tough competition, but then when all the videos score the same that's a given. If they're all at the bottom then we as creators have got to eat that turd sandwich and declare one as a winner. You have my choice, I trust that you will all make the same decision that I have.
Gimme a minute, I'll make a cool one....

I've never seen the source material, so your comment explains why it's so heavily filtered with smoothing filters (which answers your question as well).

This is my first time entering AWA Pro and I was actually rather surprised at the amount of videos mastered at the wrong framerate. I don't know how people at this level don't notice the choppiness of a lot of the clips when it's not properly restored to 24fps...and before anyone says anything, I'm not referring to the videos that were properly mastered to 30i in MPEG.

Common problem with using fansubs specifically. For some reason a lot of fan subbers will re-encode their raws. Most do it right and use either 23.976 or 24fps but there have been many occasions where I've seen people using 20fps, and in one case 120fps. One trick to drop filesize without compromising picture quality is to drop frames. Though I recommend not doing that.

Its always a problem for me with DVDs, especially when I'm converting footage. Having to convert 480i NTSC to 480p with 24fps leaves way too many things that can get messed up that i don't catch until its too late.

Actually, unless you are using some new fansub group, most encoders know what they are doing. Most of the time if you see something like 20fps, it's usually in a MKV container and is VFR to save on compression by dropping unneeded frames and typically fluctuates based on the scene you are watching. As for 120fps files, they are sometimes done that way, but are really only needed if the source material is a hybrid (containing both 24fps and 30fps segments in the same video). Since 120 is evenly divisible by 24 and 30, you get smooth playback for both, however most of these videos are not actually 120fps. Most of the 120fps videos are in an AVI container, which requires a constant framerate, so they use a simple hack that lies to the container, and all the unneeded frames are dropped (much like a VFR video video). If they are using a fansub source and decrease it to 30fps from 120fps, it will still not display properly, as the original animation was still 24fps, leaving the playback choppy at some spots due to uneven frame adding.

As for DVD footage, it's fairly easy to restore it to 24p if you are using AviSynth. Also, if you need to convert a video that is a VFR MKV, you can do this:

Code: Select all

FFmpegSource2("VFR_Sample.mkv",fpsnum=24000,fpsden=1001)

The super high framerate was on some 720p raws of death note that I got a few years back, it was more like 116fps.

If it was handled properly, it was probably 119.88fps.
