There is a pretty big gap between direct criticism and flaming >.>

Of course, those who don't know how to take criticism interrupt almost everything negative as an attack/flame. :P

i didn't say people were flaming. i was talking about MY mind and MY thoughts. but since you inverted it just replace "forum flame" with an "overall negative view on the contest" which i choose not to harbor. if i feel something needs changing then i'll voice it in my own way, which probably doesn't mean using a forum debate.

and if someone doesn't respond to criticism enthusiastically it doesn't necessarily mean that they can't take it, it's most likely because of the way the criticism was delivered. if they don't feel respected then don't expect them to give respect in return.

I was primarily talking about flaming in general with one or two small nods to things that have happened in reference to the contest :P

In response to criticism, with the way that everyone merely gives praise and the negative is rarely brought into light, any criticism whatsoever is almost viewed as disrespect, regardless of how it is delivered. And once more, I'm not just talking about the contest. However, when nothing but praise is spewed it feels almost necessary to take a direct approach for another person's words to get through the thick security blanket. :P

Also, I thought the purpose of forums were for discussion...or am I wrong? >.>

Are you kidding? The contest itself is over way too fast every year >:

I'd have to agree. Enough to make me want to enter and dare I say attend next year. Assuming I actually make something new any time between now and then.

I don't think I would want the contest to be any longer; it would be too difficult to keep track of all the videos for best in show.

I really, really hope they don't make Fun/OVA eligible for best in show, because the videos that belong in that category 1. aren't actually AMVs, and 2. will win every single year until the end of time if they are made eligible. I was happy they had their own category and own prize but I don't think they should be up for best in show. My unwanted opinion, anway.

So, was anyone else happy when they had a technical problem? I really wanted to see the preshow, but it just wouldn't be AX AMV contest without a technical problem :D . At least it didn't affect our ability to vote on the entries this year :P .

I loved your entry (not to mention it was the only drama video with a story)! I voted for you for Drama.

I've only seen the first 8 or so episodes of the first season of Clannad (when the Fuuko storyline ended I felt like the series should have been over and I stopped watching), and since After Story is apparently quite a bit more dramatic than the first season, I didn't believe it was Clannad until after it was over and my friend told me so. My thoughts the whole time: "Is this Clannad? Naw, it can't be. But they really look like Tomoya and Nagisa... this isn't anything like Clannad though... maybe it's just something with a similar art style" :P

As for community judges, I don't really see how that would be a problem. I've actually been talking with Ben about it and I feel that bringing him, along with Pwolf and Castor Troy would be excellent judges. They've got an eye for quality and diverse tastes among the three of them to offer an excellent opinion on the videos for the contest during the judging process. I don't really see the need to DQ them from the contest or make them ineligible to judge based on whether or not they entered. As long as they vote unbiasedly then there shouldn't be a problem. Kisanzi and I do the same thing for NDK and I've entered the past two years, we have friends entering and he's even trying for a submission this year. Hell, most of the time I give my videos a ranking of 4/10 because, even though their mine, I feel that's what they honestly deserve. Besides, I don't see those 3 guys stamping their feet and whooping like idiots every time their own video plays so they would probably be the best choices ;p
Ben has already said he'd be down for it, same with Scott and I don't Ryan would have a problem :P

Or if anything, just don't let them judge their own videos. As long as the final judging is done off a general average based system and not adding up scores, it would be fine.

On this one I have to disagree strongly. No matter how hard we try to make it unbiased all it would take is one or two people to cry bias and the drama would rise to fever pitch yet again. Even perceived bias is just as bad as actual bias in the credibility of a contest in my mind. I would love to have Ben back in the judging pool. However he would not be allowed to enter that year. We will just have to agree to disagree on that one. I agree with you in concept but in practice its not that simple. I have deliberately kept the judges list private both out of respect for the judges and to prevent anyone trying to curry favor from them. Not that 90% of the folks on this board would even think of such a thing but not a year goes by where I don't get people trying to sweet talk their way into the contest, usually its folks who miss the deadline. Is that a misguided thought? Maybe.

The other problem with knowing who all the judges are is that you can learn their preferences and then people just start to make videos they think will fit the judges tastes not their true vision for how they want their video to be. That, in my mind, has the strong potential to limit and or stifle creativity even if only a small amount.

Troy outed himself. To be 100% honest about this, I am of mixed feelings on his having done so. But, whats done is done. To date it has not proven a hindrance so I am not overly worried about it.

Lastly,on this reply, the number of judges. The number I try for is 10. Its a nice diverse sampling while not proving too unwieldy when it comes time for averaging the ballots.

my.02 for now.
