So I'd like to have someone who's heavily involved in the AMV community on the podcast this week to talk about this AX thing. Any recs?

Shit. This is just what we -don't- need.

If it weren't for the fact I've got to be in Nevada in about a week to take teh Nevada BAR exam I'd take them up on that offer seeing that I seem to be one of the few people in that thread that actually has read and follows U.S. copyright law and cases to know what the hell it means.

Edit: Michael be prepared for some stiff arguing, Zac has made it no secret in the past that he really does not like AMVs. There was one of his ANN columns some years ago where he declared them without merit and uncreative (I'm paraphrasing based on memory here but that was the gist of it).

Thanks for the heads up. [edit] Trimmed after further research and finding that the information given me was inaccurate [end edit]
<shrug> At the same time trying to turtle up and ignore him would only make things worse so I would rather they hear it from the horses mouth than make shit up ya know?

P.S.
And good luck on the Bar Exams. I know they can be a royal bear to deal with.

I agree, ignoring would be a bad idea as would somebody who is unprepared for a stiff argument. Frankly I don't listen to the podcasts so I'm not certain what is oral argument style is like (i.e. if he is even and level headed or is aggressive and biased) - though that's to me genrally not having the time to listen to podcasts. Not that I expect you to run into a "fox news" situation here. I wish I had more time to go through my paperwork becaue I coudl throw your way all the case law that backs up my arguments there concerning how cosplay and doujinshi are just as much a copyright violation as AMVs when talking strictly on law (once again only refering to anime here). Hell I was intentionally not mentioning being an attorney on that arguement because I am EXTREMELY cautious about violating PR regulations, it looks bad enough if you get called by the State BAR for a potential violation; and even worse if it's within your first year of practice.

Thanks for the vote of confidence for the BAR btw. I'm stressed which I shouldn't be because I passed California's BAR about a year ago and Nevada's is purportedly easier but an 18 hour exam is still an 18 hour exam and a bear to study for.

Wouldn't normally post on this but since i think it might help micheal prepair here it goes.

This is the level of maturity of the head editor of ANN

Said editor was calling amv creators drama queen. Quote his own inflammatory statement back to him (IE your adding to it). Proceeds to get block by him on twitter after he responds telling me that i can't take a joke. Yea if it's about how we all steal after effects then how about i make jokes about how i had sex with your mother last night. In other words a 6 year old.

He's not going to be remotely fair as far as i can tell. This is something he takes a personal beef with for whatever reason.

Frankly, I think it's a level of immaturity to insult an interviewer prior to hearing the interview he conducts. Wait until afterward before passing judgment.

Though I took slight offense to a comment or two on the ANN thread, it's not as though he didn't have a point (is your copy of CS3/4/5 legit?). I respect Zac and I've listened to every one of his ANNcasts. I hope he'll conduct this interview with the same level of respect I feel he's given to previous interviews, but we shall see.

The reason why I said "Just what we don't need" earlier isn't because I fear any sort of skew Zac might (or might not) spin on things, but rather because the interview itself is going to draw more attention to a matter that people were starting to move on from. Now it's going to resurrect the matter anew.

Actually I agree with Troy. the thread died the beginning of this week and the podcast will now reincite it. Something I really don't want to happen since it finally died down.

As far as Zac goes. I've never listened to his podcasts, not as something against him mind you; I just don't listen to podcasts in general, I've got other things I' like to do with my time so it's nothing personal against him nor anyone. That said I don't know how he conducts his interviews but I am sort of half expecting it to be with his bias in place. I don't honestly expect him to reach the level of fox news or some other sensationalist media but I wouldn't be surprised if there is a loaded question or two to try and make Mike stumble so I've said this from the beginning, Mike should be prepared for that.

Zac is an EXTREMELY opinionated person and makes no point of hding that nor fearing whom he may offend with his comments. This was brought up once in an old Answerman column on ANN becaues the new guy helming the column doesn't get anywhere close to the hatemale Zac used to get. Zac just honestly comes off as an angry and cynical person to me, you can tell by comparing his reviews of shows to the other reviewers both in terms of tone and diction. The only thing I've never cared for about this is that he takes sort of a "holier than thou" attitude when confronted. He has his points and he is right - hell I don't know anyone that's wrong 100% of the time - some of the time but its the manner he conducts himself in I can never agree with.

That said, wouldn't be worth essentially sparking a flame argument against him, it just makes everyone look bad in the process. The best thing to do is to approach it level headed and calm and refute negative claims without geting inflamed by them.

Interview is done.
Went really well. Tried to bring up the legality. I think I deflected it fairly well.
One or two comments will likely be taken issue with by some of the more drama prone individuals...can't really be helped. I admitted that this section of fandom, like pretty much any other subset of fandom is slightly drama prone but its far from alone in that And it is because its members are passionate about it. His response can be seen as snarky given his tone but its essentially harmless.

Those who are looking to find issue will find it regardless of how well the interview did or didn't go. On the whole I feel pretty good about it.

Your right. I just don't like people calling the group thieves and and drama queens. I am going to stop reading ANN. I don't even see how this is such a controversy when all it's been is internet fights. In the end the people who are making such claims have to actually prove them. It's no a burden on the accused. I own After effects/premier legit and the people that ive known who win contests do also.

Ok good, I likely will find fault but I tend to view everything with a scrutinizing eye (there is very little in this world I will take at face value). But I also not ot make mountains out of molehills. Frankly I've never made it a secret that I dislike Zac so it's not like this will change my opinion in any way. Glad you feel it went well. I assume you meant that THEY tried to bring up the legality of them not you, the sentance is a bit unclear. Would have liked to tkae that question myself for obvious reasons (*insert appropriate smiley here, not sure which one would work*).

Heh, didn't know you liked Michael better, frankly I only was using Mike for brievity. Duly noted.
