Let me preface this post by saying I am partially stream of consciousness/venting here. I am also speaking as an individual NOT an official representative of AX or SPJA. This is my PERSONAL opinion and commentary. That said I may not be the most diplomatic at all times, but I try to be honest and direct. I try not to play political games. This is a double edged sword.
On the whole money thing. Keep in mind this is tying in with our 20th AX celebrations and "Year of the Fan" activities. There is no guarantee that there will be cash prizing next year. Believe me I was just as shocked as all of you when the CEO, on behalf of the BOD, approached me and said "Guess What, you have 10K in prize money how do you want to divvy it up?...Oh and you have to present it as cash.(check)"
I was originally going to try and get Gift certificates to New Egg and such to help the editors expand their tool set then this was literally dropped in my lap. He then went on to inform me that it was part of the 20th anniversary stuffs. I have to be honest when I say I am absolutely surprised at all the negative reactions that have bubbled forth on this topic. However, I can assure you it is tempering my views on the idea of perpetuating it beyond this year.
Several valid and legitimate (and a few rather crackpot) concerns and points have been brought up here AND on the ANN discussion of it. I and my team will have to very carefully review and consider them before any discussion of perpetuation of cash prizing beyond this year can be considered. And we will do this after this year's event.
It seems to have also re-ignited the whole "Are AMV's legal" argument. I am not an attorney. I don't claim to be one. I have heard several arguments for and against. Expo's paying of ASCAP/BMI fees for the event happens to have the side benefit of covering the music aspect of the AMVs for the purposes of its display and exhibition at con. This benefits the event as well as the editors. However it does not cover the editor outside of the event. Nor, realistically, should it.
As for the video side of it. The biggest argument I have heard for this is the "Fair Use" argument. But the fact that most US rights holders are on record as saying they aren't particularly bothered by it and that many view it as free advertisement also helps. My personal feelings on it are just that personal.
In the end I guess it is for the lawyers and rights holders to decide.
Like you all, I want this event to be the best it can be. I do have several fine lines I have to walk to do it. While it is at times very frustrating and now and then down right infuriating, in the end, it usually pans out to be a good thing and I am glad to have been part of it. Thank you for your support and input. Even the ones that add to frustration. It forces me to look at all angles. for that I thank you.

AX is always going to have drama because it's the big guy so everything it does is under a microscope. Not helping is the fact that AX had a longstanding bad reputation with regards to treatment of AMV activities in general, so the AMV event gets an even bigger microscope.
That's not to say the contest doesn't have its problems, but I feel the biggest problem is perception. Even if the event were running perfectly, it still would be hampered by a perception that AX "doesn't care" about AMV. I think AX needs to make a "shock and awe" effort to overcome it.
