Ohayocon 2011 AMV Contest

Postby ahinton » Sat Aug 21, 2010 10:33 am

Hello. My name is Adam and I am the new AMV liason (read contest coordinator) for the upcoming Ohayocon convention in January. I am creating this thread is to announce that we are now accepting entries for Ohayocon 2011's AMV contest up until Dec 19th, 2010. For a list of contest rules please go here. E-mailed entries are accepted if you don't want to pay for shipping costs. I do ask that you use one of the address in the rules (I know that there are two addresses, please use the g-mail address as that is the one that I frequently check). You do not have to be present to recieve your award, if you so happen to win something. If you have any questions you are welcome to ask.
Thank you.

I am replying to my own post (assuming that I don't commit any fellony here) to update everyone that if you are interested in entering in Ohayocon's AMV contest, please do so by the 19th of December. I am specifically looking for AMVs in the comedy category as there is currently a shortage. Again, any questions please feel free to ask.

I would send in a submission to the Comedy category if I hadn't already sent mine in for Action.

As promised I have the list of the videos that will compete in the 2011 Ohayocon AMV contest.
The list below will show, first, the video's title, then the editor's name or studio, and finally, the category assigned by said editor.
If you have entered and sent in your video, but do not see it on this list, it will still be shown at an overflow showing but will not qualify for this contest. I should be able to get all of the videos shown even at the overflow showing, but because of time restraints, there is a possibility that a couple may not get shown. In which case you will recieve a personal e-mail from me.

As of today Jan 8th, 2011, this list is offically final and will not change. In other words, this is the list that will be shown at Ohayocon and no changes will be made. So with that said, here is the list:

1. Explosive Soul by Mike Hernadez, Action-Drama
2. The Demon Butler of Fleet Street by Tara Shramek, Upbeat Comedy Trailer
3. I'm in a Cup by Deuce Loosley Productions, Comedy
4. Exploitation by Aubrey Buehner, Romance
5. Heart of a Teez by Monster Zombie Productions, Drama
6. Saiyan Stray by Way of the Pride Studios, Action
7. Me, Myself, and Me by Hal of Borg, Character-Profile Comedy
8. Sanctuary by Steven Copley, Romance-Drama
9. Sugar Voodoo by Electra Stanley, Dance/Upbeat
10. Munto Extreme by Dimensioncr8r, Romance-Action
11. Wrath (A Variation) by Smiley Face Production, Comedy-Action
12. The Sound of Breaking Hearts by Cody J Riebe, Romance
13. When it's over by Jump Cat Productions, Drama - Upbeat
14. A Bandit's Dream by Divine Illusion Production, Action - Drama
15. Particleman20XX by Robert Hill, Comedy
16. A New Team, An Old Fear, And a Second Chance by Mary Jones, Drama
17. Tainted Love by Midsummer Nights Studios, Romance - Drama
18. Fighting In the Rain by Tiger M, Action
19. Take It All Away by Leanne Pletersky, Drama - Action
20. Waking up to You by Inuyasha Daisuki Studios, Romance - Drama
21. My Best Friend by Talia Ariens, Comedy -Romance
22. Sonnet 71 by Maggie Harbison, Drama - Action
23. K-ON My Love is a Stapler Unplugged by Chris Wagner, Romance - Drama
24. You Remain by Warlike Swans, Romance - Drama

And that is the official list. I want to take this opportunity to thank each and everyone of you who entered their videos into the contest.

Sincerly,

But I made the finals and that's cool. ;)

I can't wait until I can go to conventions. Any convention. Of course, by the time I CAN I'll just be haunting the place. :(

Their website only lists the top three, so maybe no groups.

I think it said on their rules page that they were only going to award the 3 favorites.

I just read on their forum that the subtitles on our video (You Remain) and the Sonnet 71 video were cut off. Presumably everyone with the same aspect ration had the tops & bottoms of their videos cut off....

Makes me sad, I never expected to place, but I at least wanted to not place with a video comprehensible to the audience.

I just wanna know possibly how my video ("I'm In a Cup") did overall.
There were supposed to be like groups of four videos and the fans would vote for their favorite within that group.
The overall winners were decided by a general vote among the group winners.
Kinda convoluted system but I hope it changes next year.

First, I want to applogize for not getting back to everyone sooner. The afternath of Ohayocon for me was the following: I had a situation with my finances that needed to be delt with, a situation with contest that was brought to my attention after the fact, and finally I have been battling flu like symptoms, which I am still battling as of this writing.

HalOfBorg and Deuce - This year we did the contest based on what the audience thought was the top three videos of the entire contest. One of the reasons for this is that I got a lot of videos of a couple of categories and not enough of a couple of others. Among the several things I am taking a look at is changing the category names to see if that evens things out. I got a great post about that on Ohayocon.org's forums.

Deuce - You and I have talked about the system used for this past contest before, via personal e-mail, and rest assured your input is greatly appriciated. I do plan on making changes to the system and hopefully it is for the better. As for your video, I believe it did place either 5th or 6th. Overall it was well received.

Warlike Swans - Your subtitle was croped but only a little at the bottom. Still it was enough that I did get some complaint about that. I put the contest on a burnt DVD and I think the DVD player at the convention stretched the video out a little too much. I was unable to get it fixed and for that, I applogize to you for not giving your AMV proper justice. The subtitle issue is one of my main topics during my personal review. I hope you still consider sending your future AMV's to Ohayocon.

For everyone else, I will try to stop by and check your feedback on this forum. I can also be reached on my e-mail address:
amv2011.ohaycon@gmail.com or stop by the Ohayocon.org forums under the programming section.

In the future, you may want to look into the 'Title Safe Area' when you are putting subtitles into a video destined for a convention. Especially if they are going to use a DVD to display the videos. Even some graphics cards also 'overscan' and in the process can cut off subtitles that were put in a video intended to be viewed on a computer screen that doesn't overscan. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Safe_area
