And now, the aftermath (at least from my perspective):
IMHO, it went very, very well, especially when you consider that we only had two weeks to prep the event. Amazingly enough, most of the audience got there at the very beginning, and stayed until the very end of the contest.
But it couldn't have gone so well without the help of a LOT of people.
I really appreciate all the attending AMV creators who contributed their knowledge in answering audience questions, and special thanks to Kitsuner for spontaneously loaning us a huge library of AMV's to screen for the audience during the competition, and for stepping up as the AMV-J. If you want the job next year, it's yours. Let's start compiling a playlist now.
Baitmaster and Wired Knight, thanks for putting your mad skills on display. In case you hadn't figured out from spindragon's post, I was able to get the finished product onto a hard drive and delivered to Michael in the booth at Masquerade for screening during half-time. He was blown away, and Troy's text message to me read simply, "HOLY S--T!" Great job, both of you!
I also really, really appreciate the involvement of the other Iron Chefs. Even though you didn't get selected, you stuck around for the whole three hours and provided answers to audience questions, and most importantly, came in very handy with technical knowledge when we were having issues with final render.
Nic, great job with on-site tech. Couldn't have pulled it off without you, especially since Troy was not available for the whole event.
And speaking of Troy, none of this could have happened without him. He was able to convince his boss to loan us two of his company's former servers to use as our editing machines. He configured them in his spare time, tested them, and got them to the show on his own dime, and all in less than two weeks. He really does have manly love for AMV's.
This is just the beginning. We only had two weeks this time around. With another year to plan the next contest, we can be more organized, hopefully get sponsorships for better equipment, and have everything planned out well ahead of time. And with more advance notice and the word of mouth from this year's contest, we will probably get a bigger room and more equipment to provide the kind of presentation I had originally envisioned for the contest.
Thanks again everyone! See you next year!
