Also wanted to make a brief point about people getting pissed off at the judges...
Why are people surprised when the judges pick something different than the audience? If the judges always picked the same videos, what would be the point of having judge's awards at all? The judges use different criteria to rate the video than an audience does. Why else do you think Comedy has won Fanime's audience choice award for the last 4 years?
It'd be like people complaining the Academy Awards don't recognize the movies that made the most money that year, or wondering why the MTV Movie Awards didn't like the same films that won Oscars. DUH!
I think the way Fanime's contest does their awards is great - you have a set of Judges who gives our awards based on their criteria, and the fans also get to give awards to the videos they liked. Everyone's happy.
As for the judges, I have no idea who they were, but Scott told me he has two or three different rounds of judging with completely different people. If I truly were to have "tainted" the judges somehow, it would've taken a whole lot of work. But then again, I guess I have no "integrity" so that sort of thing isn't beyond me.

It's not just you... I've noticed that they're kinda off for the past three years, at least (and I've only been going for four years). I can understand the judges wanting to pick something different than the viewers, but they always seem to pick the opposite end of the spectrum, y'know? @_@wwf_htm wrote:
well... it was picked by the judges and from what i can see none of the judges' picks matched up with the viewers' picks. i don't want to take anything away from your win as i'm sure that your video was above average, but i find the whole judging process both weird and disturbing. who are these judges and what standards are they using?
Plus, I can't believe my Irish Enchilada vid made it into the finals over the Let This Be the End of Evangelion vid that C & C Productions made. LTBtEoE has humor that makes sense to just about everybody, whereas Irish Enchilada's humor is largely based upon knowing that Farfarello is supposedly Irish, according to Weiss Kreuz canon. o_O We added it on a whim - what I was really submitting was the re-do of my Trigun vid!

I'm sorry the video quality was bad, as I am still learning, but I don't think that video quality has very much to do with how a video is as a whole. You can make an incredibly good video was horrible footage, or a horrible video with good footage. I'm sorry you didn't understand what I was trying to convey, but in Hoshi no Koe, I felt that the main theme the director was trying to convey was a feeling of hope: hope that Mikako would stay alive, hope that Noboru would hold out for Mikako, hope that the two could eventually love each other again. The song "Hope Has a Place" conveys these feelings too, such as "whispering words have sailed out sigh" and the feelings of the two being told through space. I tried to connect the two together that also conveyed my feelings for my boyfriend at the time, and the video has some personal undertones that I don't believe others would understand. It also was not a simple "mix and out comes video", because as I'm sure you know, you've got to start with some ingredients and instructions before you start to make the cake. I put a lot of thought into this video, and I'm sorry if you couldn't see that. Obviously people here though didn't see what was so good about "Extraordinary World". Maybe we both have problems conveying our messages to fans.ErMaC's Yahoo Groups Review wrote: Fungie - Mikako's Hope

I didn't like this video. The video quality on it was crap, interlacing everywhere, and there wasn't enough of a connection between song and show. Take slow moving song, pair with slow, moving anime, mix together, out comes video. No thanks, I want more."
In any case, it's good to hear some feedback from people, and I appreciate your comments.

Dude, she didn't say it was a bad video, just that the poor time slot for the contest resulted in the first few vids not getting a fair chance. Try reading her post before you slam her, please.ErMaC wrote:JCD, I am not surprised at all your video won best action. It was my 2nd choice for best action, and I thought it was an awesome video (see my brief set of reviews I posted to the AMV Mailing list on Sunday). Your award was well deserved. Don't let anneke's crap bother you; I don't.

I'm glad you appreciated them so much you had to work in an insult to my video in the process.
First off, I've never seen Hoshi no Koe, so obviously some of the video is lost on me. But you shouldn't assume that the viewer has seen the show, especially when submitting to a contest, and especially with an obscure show like that. I've never seen Golden Boy, but I still really liked the Golden Boy drama video, as I said in my review.
And despite what you may think, video quality has very much to do with how well a video may be received. When you blow up a video to the size of a projection screen, every single little detail gets magnified to the point where it makes it a big deal. All the people around me noticed the problems, even people who had no idea what "interlacing" was. It detracted from watching the video. Would you expect a film shot with horrible lighting, bad film, and bad camera angles to tell it's story properly? The technical part doesn't make a video good, necessarily. The technical part prevents the video from becoming bad because of technical flaws. Of all the videos in the finals, only 2 had really poor video quality. Yours was one of them.
If the video has personal undertones that you don't expect people to understand, why expect them to or get upset about it when they don't?

Fanime has not even HAD Judges choices farther back than last year. It began when Scott took over the contest in 2003.

I will quote exactly what she said, emphasis added:Starherd wrote:Dude, she didn't say it was a bad video, just that the poor time slot for the contest resulted in the first few vids not getting a fair chance. Try reading her post before you slam her, please.
Now, copious grammatical mistakes aside, sounds to me like she's saying his video wasn't as good as the others, and they were more deserving. I tend to disagree. That crazy lady wrote:Fourth... The Action winner of the viewer's choice... It was one of the last videos shown. Due to the crappy time slot of the contest, alot of people came in at the end of the action category and therefore didn't see all the action videos, and only voted on the last two or three they saw. When the better action videos in the catergory where shown much earlier. The 1st video was one of the best (and even if it was miscategorized). If people missed videos from a category, they should not be allowed to vote for that category.
