When will we find out the finalists? I'm totally new to these contests, so sorry if that question seems rude or derpy, I'm just not used to how things usually go.

Patience, young dove. Good things always come to those who wait.
Of course, by that logic, so does death row. Meh

AFAIK, first, the prescreening results need to be tallied, then after a tentative list is made, Otakon sends it to their lawyer for approval, at which point a finalist list is posted. Probably will go up in two-three weeks from now, if not sooner.pinkhearter13 wrote:When will we find out the finalists? Also, I was wondering if a change-log would be put up this year. Always enjoy reading those.

You'll see this next to my entry "irriadin - uploaded a 2GB file, was he really that lazy to not convert to a lossy codec?"Davis 51 wrote:Also, I was wondering if a change-log would be put up this year. Always enjoy reading those.
...the answer is yes.

In my case, time constraints and my TMPEGEnc refusing to cooperate. My file was 3Gb.irriadin wrote:You'll see this next to my entry "irriadin - uploaded a 2GB file, was he really that lazy to not convert to a lossy codec?"Davis 51 wrote:Also, I was wondering if a change-log would be put up this year. It's more like a "what's going on O_O" excited question, instead of a matter of patience. xD So I agree~Parodic Productions wrote:Patience, young dove. Good things always come to those who wait.
Ohhh, thanks for the info, that cleared things up a lot. That's cool they send it to lawyers. Always interesting to see what goes on behind a contest~Davis 51 wrote:AFAIK, first, the prescreening results need to be tallied, then after a tentative list is made, Otakon sends it to their lawyer for approval, at which point a finalist list is posted. With any luck, it'll be like Upbeat in 2010. That category was noticeably lackluster in 2009 (and I say that as one of the finalists in it!), and I wouldn't be surprised if the perceived lack of competition led to the 2010 Upbeat slate being the most stacked category in the contest.l33tmeatwad wrote:Davis 51 wrote:As for comedy, I think I'll take my shot at it next year. I hope mine fits into whatever category it gets put into... I don't think I'm funny enough for comedy, and mostly I like to parody the original music video, but I don't know if it's close enough to be considered a parody (that and it'd easily get beaten out by movie trailers)

Little update for ya'll. The finalists are already decided. Scintilla was kind enough to help out with the troll-checking and we think we got all of them. There are a few entries that will be disqualified for rule breaking, those creators will get e-mails this evening. DVDs are being mailed out to the Ota-lawyers either tomorrow or Thursday depending on how fast I can re-encode everything.
Otakorp is trying to crack down on off-site Otakon discussion, so to prevent our contest from being sucked into a 1984 vortex, I'm simply going to be more transparent on this board
. The POTENTIAL finalist list will be published tonight when I get home, with the BIG DISCLAIMER that it is SUBJECT TO CHANGE AT ANY TIME.
A quick word about the different categories of "qualifying":
Finalists - Entries that will be played in the final contest. Entrants are entitled to special seating benefits.
Non-Finalists - Entries that will only be played at one of the "non-finalist" screenings and are not a part of the main contest. Entrants are entitled to special seating benefits.
Trolls - Entries that have won a major award at another convention that took place before the weekend of the Otakon deadline. These entries will only be played at one of the "non-finalist" screenings and are not a part of the main contest. Entrants are entitled to special seating benefits.
Disqualified - An entry that has been DQ'd, is usually done so for legal reasons and as such, we can't acknowledge that we even received them. The rules are pretty clear about things such as watermarks, foul language, etc. DQ'd entries will not be played at the con, and the entrants are NOT entitled to the special seating benefits available to the other submitters.
I do not know the convention schedule yet so i can't comment on badge pickups.
