[new to making amvs, need help]

Heyy everyone Im new and I'm trying to figure out how to get anime on my comp so I can start making AMV's too. (:
But im a noob when it comes to this computer stuff, so can someone give me the rundown of things? like what is a codec and why do I need to download them to be able to play the anime I download?? sorry if these are stupid questions >.<
