A new computer with Windows Vista™ comes with an updated version of Windows Movie Maker.

Heck, a new $500 computer can get you a 2GHz+ dual core processor, up to 4GB of RAM, a 500GB or larger HDD, and Vista Home Premium. You could also get discrete Nvidia or ATI graphics.

At the very least, I'd also suggest a RAM upgrade (to at least 2GB) plus a bigger HDD (1TB is my sweet spot), add AE and keep Vegas 7.

With windows 7 right around the corner, wouldn't this be bad timing to go and get vista?

yea, I definitely think you should upgrade to a new computer and think that it's fits perfectly with in your budget. I recommend AE and photoshop. You can get these in a suite with premiere also. Like other people said they're isnt a big difference in the new vegas versions and it seems like nothing else will run on your computer properly without an upgrade.

Windows 7 was just a Beta version and I liked it; soo much smaller than XP3 or Vista.

While your out looking at things, don't forget to check-out the new 1.5 Terra-Byte
USB hard drives .. for actual video editing room.

Truth is, that no matter what system you get -- Hard Drive space is always the most expensive.

If you go high-end, I would argue that the CPU is the most expensive part.

Unless you're playing with Solid State Drives.

Well, I already have a 2 Terra Byte External, so for me, space isn't really an issue at the moment. I'm just concerned about being able to run the programs I buy.

I'm also looking for a effects package for Vegas 7 if there is one. I got recommended one to download a ways while back but I forgot what it was. Puddy or something like that.

It adds new effects types like screen shatter as well as a bunch of other transition and Video FX to your list in Vegas 7. I just can't remember the name of it.

But yeah, my main concern is being able to run the programs to begin with.

If you get AE, you won't have to worry about getting a vegas effects package.

Actually, Vegas pro 9 just came out yesterday, probably upgrading to that myself. However, if you're willing to pay that much , AE CS4 is probably your best bet.

With that money, just buy a new computer like everyone else is saying.

Huuh what?
hard drive space being expensive? :nono:

I won't even go into dual xeon setups with cpus over $1600.
--
just decking out for a 'kicking' computer, the mobo itself would cost $370 bucks.
minus a new cpu

i don't know man, splurging for a 1.5TB HDD is pretty cheap. $/GB is insanely cheap now.

unless ur talking about 1.5TB of SSD, then thats a whole new ballpark.

==========

$2500 spending budget. seriously, buy a new computer, it WILL make your editing life easier.
