Read ErMaC & AbsoluteDestiny's Friendly AMV Guides?

or the short version:

How to make an AMV in Sony Vegas:
1. Rip and convert DVDs
2. import and set up
3. Edit to your taste :) (the fun part)
4. export as an uncompressed or lossless avi
5. compress your Video and your Audio OR Compress both in Zarxgui
6. upload to the org
