More Advanced Software

Postby -Reda- » Wed May 21, 2008 1:31 am

Hey guys, whats up.
I've been editing in After Effects for about a year now, and I really do like it and feel like I'm learning quite a bit. I remember when I started in AE I felt like the world opened up to me editing-wise. I was just wondering if there were more advanced software out there than After Effects. I do enjoy it but I'm looking for something used by actual professional editors out there. Now I know pro editors DO use After Effects, but is this really the top of editing software? Or is there more out there that I could start learning thats a step up (if it can be called that) from After Effects?

Thanks for any advice in this regard in advance.

well, you have them custom effects progs like Particle Illusion and fxhome, but those are just for BLASTS and sadopumpkin etc... But if you havea mac then you have access to some more advanced programs like Shake, Motion, Color etc...

I actually do have a Mac, and I've glanced at those programs. Aside from a different look, do those actually offer anything more than After Effects does?

Sorry for the double post, but I'll try to elaborate on what I'm looking for. I'm looking for the software used to edit real movies professionally, not from the 3D point of view, I honestly don't want much to do with 3D. But lets take the movie "The Bourne Identity" for example. What would someone say that was edited with?

Avid is supposedly the "standard" for movie studios. I'm not sure if I believe that or not, but there it is.

the most advanced editor is the person doing the work.

I can't say for certain, but there's probably some 3D aspect to a lot of the effects done in that movie; even for the times when it's not so obvious.

Thank you for all the replies they've been very helpful. And yes I'm well aware that the editor makes the video, not the software, I'm just interested in learning to work with what the "pros" work with. I'll look into Avid a bit more, thank you for the information.

If you can believe Wikipedia...
Avid is still considered the industry standard, with the majority of major feature films, television programs, and commercials created with its NLE systems. Avid products were used in the creation of every film nominated in the Best Picture, Directing, Film Editing, Sound Editing, Sound Mixing, Visual Effects, and Animated Feature categories of the 2005 Academy Awards. Avid systems were also the overwhelming NLE choice of the 2004-2005 Primetime Emmy Award nominees, being used on more than 50 shows in eleven major categories. Final Cut Pro continues to develop a strong following, and the software received an Technology & Engineering Emmy Award in 2002.

Just brace yourself for some rather astronomical prices when you look for Avid.

Honestly the market is split between FCP and AVID. More and more editing jobs want FCP certification.
