I'll break this down:

You want to do A: Fitting the scenes as they are as closely as you can together without losing any of the picture of either clip, including the black borders. There simply isn't a good way to do this, and if you try, it won't look good.

I'm telling you that the standard is B: The images I showed you. There is no way to make the 4:3 footage match the 16:9 footage without cropping some of the picture of the 4:3 footage, or by letterboxing the 16:9 footage to 4:3 as I have shown you in the pictures I have posted.

This is reality. It is not opinions I share, but video quality and video standards facts. You have asked what the best way is to accomplish the merging of the two sources, and we have replied. There simply is not another way to go about this. Now, I can give you the avs scripts or the list of vdub filters to accomplish the steps I have outlined, but I won't help you do something completely ass-backwards. And neither will anyone else.

The snappy comments from other posters demonstrate the frustration we all have. Some of us are just better about holding it in. Teachers and instructors get frustrated with pupils; I know, I'm an English teacher, but we still have to respect the feelings of our students. However, there comes a time when a teacher must be clear that there is a right way and a wrong way to perform a task. I have shown you the right way, please do not ask me to help you learn the wrong way. :?

But we don't want to edit the story scenes.O_O Just add letterboxes to the one.

I'm not sure why I'm getting yelled at here, when that poster was the one being rude. I should never have asked for help here in the first place.-.-

The problem is that the scenes in question are not even in their letterboxing as is, so you have to edit them both in order to make the adjustment look good.

You're not being yelled at. No more than when I tell a student firmly "the comma goes HERE not THERE." I'm expressing, strongly, that this is not an "option" if you want to be "correct." There is right, and there is wrong. There is no anger behind such a declaration. It is the simple matter of fact.

And no, you did the right thing by asking a question. You know the old phrase, there are no stupid questions. I'd rather you ask and get an answer than not ask in the first place.

I should note that if you only alter the first image it will look like this with the unaltered one having grey letterboxes:
ImageImage
left image with black letterboxes__________________Right image unaltered[simply resized]
Code: Select all
imagesource("cap0071.jpg")
crop(28,10,-28,-18)
lanczosresize(584,324)
addborders(28, 42, 28, 114)
lanczosresize(320,240)

Code: Select all
imagesource("cap0012.jpg")
lanczosresize(320,240)

To avoid that, you can alter both images like I mentioned earlier, or specify the color of the new letterboxes to be grey using RGB 6-digit numbers:
ImageImage
left image with grey letterboxes______________________[right image unaltered]
Code: Select all
imagesource("cap0071.jpg")
crop(28,10,-28,-18)
lanczosresize(584,324)
addborders(28, 42, 28, 114, $151515)
lanczosresize(320,240)

And this is the correct way of doing it [like kio did]:
ImageImage
____________Left and Right image done according to standard convention: ____________
Code: Select all
imagesource("cap0071.jpg")
crop(30,12,-30,-20)
lanczosresize(320,240)
#dimensions are now 320x240, standard 4:3 [aka fullscreen]

Code: Select all
imagesource("cap0012.jpg")
crop(30,44,-30,-116)
lanczosresize(320,180)
addborders(0,30,0,30)
#letterboxed to look 16:9[aka widescreen]
#dimensions are now 320x240, standard 4:3

I honestly think you were to late. She's obviously not interested in sticking to the conventions of the community she has sought help from.

And beyond that, we aren't even speaking to the editor. She's just an intermediary. I must agree with our esteem mod; we've wasted a lot of time and effort, but we tried.
