in either i suppose you would just mask out the characters you want in silhouette.. (or chroma key if you have the option of a solid colored background) and turn the brightness of the "silhouette" part all the way down.. till its black
then put a background (whatever it is you were wanting) on the line below the silhouette...

chroma will take out one color... thats what chroma is

yes its a pain but usually worth it in the end...
depending on what you want to do depends on how you are going to be able to do it
