I had this problem often. I found out that the main cause was due to my codec. At the time I had the Community Codec Pack and one of those codecs would repeatedly open for each individual clip I was selecting until finally the the program crashed. You might want to troubleshoot the codecs that your using, turn off/uninstall them (If you have more then one) one by one until you isolate the one that is causing the program to crash. that is not the answer... the real answer is:
It wasn't really meant to be the answer alone, once you found out whether the codec is giving you a problem or not, the next step would be to look and see if there is a newer version. But you are right, Divx and Xvid files shouldn't be used for editing anyways.
