I would try to avoid re-compressing an already compressed audio track (i.e. MP3 to WAV to MP3).
Ideally, you'd rip the song from the CD to a WAV file and edit with that. Then when all is done and finished, you can compress that WAV to an MP3 (or other format) to include in your final video.
If the music you are using is from an online store or source, chances are that it is either MP3, WMA, AAC (MP4) or some other audio compression format. In that case, re-compressing the audio is almost unavoidable so expect some quality loss.
Although, if the audio is originally a MP3 and you did not edit it in any way, you may be able to mux the MP3 into your final XviD/DivX AVI file (assuming you are not exporting a WMV from WMM) with VirtualDubMod.
