I really don't want to go through the hassle of ripping the disk and encoding it and find out I can't edit them with a older version of premiere.

Editing .m2ts directly is not advised. As far as cs3 is concerned, it should be able to import them, but editing will be slow, and potentially buggy too, think like editing xvid directly. By all means convert them to lossless, or edit them through avisynth, though the former decision will take up loads of space, and the latter will still be slow, albeit not buggy.
