Hey, i have a really big problem.

I am doing an AMV for the new Devil May Cry anime, its going really well, but most of my files are in .avi format. Vegas just wont recognise it so when i import my vids, i only get the audio.

Anyone got any advice

Thanks ^^

what is the codec of your avi files? to get codec information right-click on the video file, and choose "properties" and click the tab that says "summery" it should be listed next to compression and if that doesnt work, get a program called GSpot and drop the file in it

Ok this is a bit strange. The files that work have a DivX compression and the ones that dont work do not have a compression. I am a bit confused.

they probably do have a compression... heres your solution:

then go to file->save

use those to mark the beginning and the end of the "clips" you want so you can save room

Ok thanks alot...not as easy as i hoped it would be but not too bad. I have quite a few files that are not in DivX/Xvid format.

Thanks for the help, This is my first AMV (as you may have guessed). I'll post it up somewhere on this site if i can :P

Thanks :)

if you click the red words theres more information on the subject... stuff that can go wrong, issues that can happen when using that compression, quality loss ect.

the deal is some compressions are just not handled well by editing programs and some are handled really well

if youre going to edit with .avi files always use huffyuv or Lagarith (which i like more due to a lot smaller file size than huffyuv) compressed files because they have 2 advantages:

1. lossless both will keep the quality of your footage
2. they run smoother in editing programs than out of them

really the only disadvantage i can see is that they create rather large file sizes (so i wanna state that BEFORE you ask that) so you will either need to only select the short clips you want to use and/or have a sufficient hard drive.

you can also save file space by removing the clip's audio in virtualdub: "streams"->"streams list"->"disable stream"

you might want to Read ErMaC & AbsoluteDestiny's Friendly AMV Guides for more information on editing, even though the guides are for Vegas 4-5 they are still pretty accurate for 6-7

Ok its me again

Ive finished my AMV and this thread was a big help. (search Project Dante on the main page)

For anyone experiencing the same problem as I had, I have found another way that may be more convinient for some of you.

Some editing programs can handle DivX/Xvid very easily. I used Cyberlink Powerdirector. What I reccomend is using a program like that to clip the bits you want to use out of the episode of your choice (this is optional, it just saves time) and then exporting it. These programs often change Divx/xvid to more compatible formats that can be imported into Vegas and used very easily.

Like i said, this may or may not be more convinient, but it was the way i did it. To be honest, the best advice is to not even get started using DivX/Xvid files at all. Trust me lol.

Happy Editing

Well arnt u clever. It would have been helpful to share your knowledge earlier but hey...i guess ur not THAT clever. It may have been around 5 years, but i wasnt interested in making AMVs 5 years ago. And others may find this helpful. If they do, job done. If they dont, no problem.

Happy editing mate, u sound like an expert so this thread probably isnt for you.

I don't want to bash or anything, just that threads like this pop-up very often (I was creating few of these not too long ago..) so I guess the ones who care, find out about DivX/XviD problems when reading trough guides, other people (the ones who don't care about that) will ignore this thread just like they ignore other threads like this.
