Encoding question

Postby lister007 » Fri Mar 30, 2007 7:59 am

Hi ok, been encoding for a while, mostly, well always use virtualdubmod but also own procoder 2, winavi, riverpast video cleaner, power video converter, and a whole list from the last four years or something, etc etc but what I want to do is two different things that I can't seem to do with anything I have at that mo, that includes dvd rippers, encoders blah blah blah.

The first has been asked a few times here but never found an answer, how to encode a video file with multiple video streams, I know mkv and mp4 containers will do it but what program can I use to implement it?

The second I want a straight forward encoder that will just allow me to directly select the container, for example virtualdubmod but encode the stream to xvid the audio to mp3 and then select an mp4 container.

Basically I'm looking for something better, that will do all this, and then some, would like to convert mkv to mpeg 2 the way virtualdubmod will do it to avi, but be able to queue the files to encode the way riverpast or other (quite crap but cost) programs can do. Am I really off on this and virtualdubmod can do this?

Also if someone does have a program that can do this, directly choose the container, how does it work with vp7? what container do you sujest for that?

Try MeGui for encoding to MP4, do NOT use XviD in an mp4 container - it defeats the purpose, and don't be so against having several encoding apps for all your tasks - AFAIK there isn't a good all-in-one app out there.

I wouldn't discourgage using XviD (MPEG-4 ASP) in a MP4 container since, well, it is a flavor of MPEG-4 and MPEG-4's native container is MP4.

Having said that, unless you are encoding into H.264, or you are including simple softsubs with the video, XviD in an AVI container is preferred over MP4 since it's what many people are familiar with.

My preferences:
v=XviD, a=MP3/PCM: AVI
v=H.264/XviD, a=AAC/MP3, subs=simple: MP4
v=H.264/XviD, a=OGG/MP3, streams=multiple, subs=complex: MKV

MP4 and MKV support multiple video streams/tracks, but player support is spotty.
