What's the best compression method for a dell dimension 8300 which is short on space?
mean compressing video for use as source clips for your editing software, or do you mean compressing a finished AMV for internet distribution?

not quite
some codecs are ok for editing, like lagarith or huffyuv
the files will be big, but 33% to 66% smaller than uncompressed
these codecs are also lossless, meaning that you won't loose any quality when you compress your footage
