I'm trying to convert an AVI video file with Windows Encoder

Postby Col_Thanas » Wed Dec 06, 2006 4:35 pm

i keep getting an error, is there anyway i could encode it to an WMV? i have windows movie maker atm, so i'm an bit at an loss right now for good move making program. So i'm just trying to make ends meet.

So i was wondering if there was anything i could do to make it work.

Why are you trying to convert it from AVI to WMV in the first place?

If you're trying to use the file in Windows Movie Maker, you're better off keeping it in AVI format but converting to a more editing-friendly codec, such as HuffYUV or Lagarith.

Also, what's the text of the error you're getting?

if you're using VirtualDub as opposed to VirtualDubMod, then the steps become a little out of order

steps for VirtualDub
step 1: open VirtualDub
step 2: go to file, open video file
step 3: browse for the file you want to open
step 4: click open
step 5: go to video, compression
step 6: scroll through the list of codecs (on the left) and click Lagarith when you find it
step 7: click the "configure" button
step 8: make sure "enable null frames" and "use mulithreading" are unchecked"
step 9: make sure "always suggest RGB for output" is checked
step 10: choose the mode as RGB(default)
step 11: click ok
step 12: click ok
step 13: go to file, save as avi
step 14: name your file
step 15: click save
step 16: watch the pretty numbers until they disappear
step 17: ???
step 18: profit

i dont know if this is an bad thing, but i dont see "use multithreading" anywhere on the windows with "Enable null frames."

I'm using virtualdub without the mod after it.

Found the codex, just want to be sure i dont screw this up.

so should i be worried if i dont find "use multithreading" ?

I also can't find "mode" of anykind.

read the steps carefully again.

scroll through the codecs until you find lagarith, then click it.

if you don't know if you have lagarith...then you don't.
you can get it from here

read the directions on that page (look for the bold letters "How to install Lagarith Lossless Video Codec"), it will tell you how to install the codec

this is what you should be seeing. the other alternative to going to video, compression is to press ctrl+p

You probably have an older version of VirtualDub. If it doesn't have the multithreading option, just don't worry about it.
