KH2

Postby GFreeman1998 » Mon Apr 17, 2006 7:40 pm

I managed to get Kingdom Hearts 2 videos running, but there's no sound, and using MFAudio on various files produces a message telling me that there's no audio files present in the .pss file, or an audio file consisting entirely of static. What now?

On the KH2 subject, I've tried using PSS Demux, PSS Plex, and finally Cube Media Player. Cube Media Player only found the FMV video, and a bunch of audio files of voices and sound fx. I found some Gummi ship level music and title themes at the end of the file. Not a single FMV audio stream anywhere. I believe Square compressed the FMV audio in a different format.

As for the pm3 thing I read on a previous post, pm3 is a THX certification. The studio used to record the audio is THX pm3 certified. There's no actual .pm3 format.

KH2 FMV's

Postby GFreeman1998 » Tue Apr 18, 2006 2:09 pm

When I used Cube, I got about 10 FMV's with 0 seconds of footage. Obviously, those results didn't work.

When I used Nova Extractor, I got another 10 or so files with no videos (except for one, the ending FMV, with no audio) and no audio whatsoever in any of the files. If we can find out how the audio/video was compressed (since they obviously did something different with this game), we should be on our way to locating everything necessary for the videos.

Also, on the topic of FFX-2, the process works quite well, normally, but I can't locate the opening video- as luck would have it, that's the one I want. Has anyone else run into trouble with the game, or should I try again?

I've done FFX-2. The intro is there. I think it's somewhere near the end of the video list, much like KH2's intro. I think if split correctly, certain videos appear in the list that weren't there before. I've also done Xenosaga 1 and 2. Splitting is also the key to getting those videos.

I read on a post somewhere that the FMV resolution is small, and not exactly widescreen format. This is so the videos can be saved as small files, then the game stretches the videos out to widescreen format to give the illusion that they're widescreen. This is true for Xenosaga 1/2 and KH2. It's just a cheap trick so the makers can stuff more video onto the DVD. If not, Xenosaga 1 would have been 2 discs. And the only reason Xenosaga 2 is 2 discs is because they did a poor job with compressing the video. The discs are exactly the same, except there's different video on them. The same game plays on each disc, though. Same maps, voices, FX, music, etc.

Back to the KH2 subject, if there were a way to look at the contents of the KH2.IMG file, we wouldn't have to use extractors. The FMV audio is probably saved in some kind of audio format like .aac or some crazy thing. A format that neither Nova Extractor or Cube Media Player can read, which is why we can't find it.

What about mp4?

Oh, for Xenosaga 2, they also only used single layer 4.7gb discs. That's also why there's 2 of them. Couldn't afford dual layer this time, eh?

Kingdom Hearts 2:
I just thought of something. PSS files are mpeg2 files with aac audio, right? In order for Square to save the audio in a new format like mpeg4 aac, which is higher quality and smaller size, they'd need to save the video as mpeg2 seperately from the audio, otherwise the audio would save as mpeg2 aac. This would explain why Cube Media Player can't find the audio. If it's mp4 aac, then it's too small and doesn't look like ADPCM audio. It's too well compressed to read as audio. So maybe Square did save the audio seperately as mp4 aac? I can't imagine them using any other format 'cause any other audio format would save the file too large, and wouldn't be as high of quality.

But so far I haven't found an extractor that extracts mp4 aac audio. Found a lot of DVD rippers, though. Bleh. :P

Hex editing?!

Postby GFreeman1998 » Wed Apr 19, 2006 9:25 pm

Geez, that's getting complex. That would indicate that the sound files are .aif, though... let's see if we can find an extractor that reads that type.

Unless, of course, we're ALREADY working with extractors that read that kind, in which case non-code-readers are still screwed.

Oh, and on the X-2 front, I found the opening. I must have accidentally missed it or something.

Real Emotion is so cool.

.aif, eh? That's AIFF..

Nova Extractor is able to extract that file type, though.. And it didn't find that file type in the file.

I wonder if this could be another one of those games where the splitting of the file is important in uncovering certain files inside.

Splitting of files... ugh...

Postby GFreeman1998 » Wed Apr 19, 2006 9:32 pm

In other words, without enough knowledge, we could spend all day searching for the correct file-splitting sizes, with little to no knowledge of which one works? Man.

In another thread, though, it was suggested (quite wisely) that the sounds may not be directly linked with the videos, since so much sound is simply continued into videos from the gameplay. That would mean that we're screwed (again) and must buy sound cards to collect the sound if we really want it.

I really want it.

If anyone has any brilliant ideas to bail me out of this purchase, your ideas are welcomed!

not necessarily make other ppl do your work....i already have the intro and secret ending using my improvise method....just find the vid [most likely gunna be low qual vid] on the net....then extract the audio and line it up with you video content that you ripped...and for the trailer opening i just used the passion instrumental straight off the sound track....

Clever. I was thinking of doing that, but it sounded too evil.

The KH2 audio files weren't saved in .aif. I'm pretty sure they were saved in mp4 aac, but I can't find a program that can search for that type.

I know this might be a dud but i think i'm on to something for the KH1 rippings. Instead of using MPG as the format your searching for in extractor, take mp3. Not only do audio files appear but so do Video Clip files, just labelled as MP3. The only problem is their size and playability. 7 KB a file and so on, maybe if there's a way to break that we might be lucky enough to rip these clips.

Most likely I'm wrong, but if the computer says its a video file...its a video file is it?

There's some mention on the cube media player forum that KH2's audio during CG movies is in some variation of the atrac3 format.

Project FAO's page has a FFXII movie extracting utility. This doesn't work for me, at least. I get 0 bytes of video and I think some sort of audio dump with the wav extension. The readme file in it says you need to have the atrac3 codec installed to hear the audio (which also didn't seem to work for me, even with sonic stage installed).
