Which Codec UT Video Codec RGB vs RGBA / YUV420 vs YUV422

Postby Toshi.des » Thu Jan 27, 2011 4:53 pm

So I have installed the UT Video Codec from the AMVapp but I have no clue which one to use when exporting from PPRO or VDUB.

When Exporting in PPRO I have these options:
Ut Video Codec RGB (ULRG) VCM x64
Ut Video Codec RGBA (ULRA) VCM x64
Ut Video Codec YUV420 (ULY0) VCM x64
Ut Video Codec YUV422 (ULY2) VCM x64

in VDub I have the same but the end in x86 so I am guessing VDub will not take advantage of 64 bit systems?

Anyway if someone could provide some info on which one is best for what or point me in the direction where I could find more info I would greatly appreciated it!

To the 1st question, YUV420.

To the 2nd: It will if you have a 64bit version of Vdub.

Great thanks!

Anything I should know about the others or YUV420 is the best choice for everything?

For anime you'll generally want to use YUV420 for reasons that explaining is a bit of a tl;dr you most likely won't care about. However you might need/want to use RGBA depending on the situation (for example, exporting effects from after effects or something and overlaying them on your footage in your timeline in your main NLE), but unless needed for such specific situation it's not something you should generally go for.

No, you use what your source material is. Every DVD you find will be I420 so using YUV420 makes sense, regardless of actual content. If your source is I422 though, you use YUY422, or if it's RGB, you use RGB. You just use what your source is (unless you have a reason to change it.)

What Mister Hatt said is right, however consider that DVDs and Blu-rays and, hell, even Transport Streams you'd record from TV or any raw you'd find around is yv12... hence why I said for anime you'll generally want to use YUV420.

I was addressing his question of content other than anime though.

How do you find which codec your source is using, DG index doesn't seem to display that information when I preview it.

Mediainfo. Check what says for format under video.

Alternatively, the fact that you're using DGIndex should tell you it's MPEG-2, seeing as it doesn't handle any other codecs and all. Just sayin'.

It can also handle MPEG-1 and technically .VOBs can have MPEG-1... though that's so rare of an occurance that there is no point in arguing, yeah.
But well, mediainfo is still useful to check the video format on any container, so... it'll be helpful sooner or later anyway.

I don't know of any vobs with MPEG-1, mostly because all commercial mastering software ONLY allows for MPEG-2. The spec supports it, but it never gets used. I guess you might have MPEG-1 in an mpg container if you're encoding from the interlaced OP vids on eroge, but as if anyone here does that.

I don't know exactly what I am looking for in this menu.

Btw are there other programs better suited for identifying this information, also one that can identify more containers, like .mov.

...
http://mediainfo.sourceforge.net/
I did say "Mediainfo" before "Check what says for format under video." >_>
And I also said "mediainfo is still useful to check the video format on any container," I don't get how you missed that either. :?
But anyway, like Mister Hatt says, if it loads in DGIndex, then it very likely is MPEG-2 (MPEG-1 is just too rare to be the case at hand, after all).
