My guess, judging from your first post, is that you want a lossless codec right now. They won't have any quality loss from the source, however they will be rather big in filesize. x264 does have a lossless mode, however I suggest against x264vfw, and if lossless really is what you want, I think
UTVideo is a better choice for a couple reasons (speed and colorspaces, mainly).
If what you wanted instead was a relatively small copy as far as filesize is concerned, then some loss is necessary. The best codec for lossy encodes is indeed x264. However, don't use x264vfw with virtualdub, but use something like
zarxgui instead: while not perfect and rather outdate, it is a really simple gui for x264, so you'll really just have to load the footage and hit encode most of the time to get pretty decent results.
