Best Compression (from RAW)

Postby Scrilax » Tue Aug 10, 2010 9:44 am

Hi, I wanted to know the best codec to use in a video compression. I used Fraps to do a couple of videos (which are saved in AVI format (RAW)) and I wanted to compress them but in a way that they won't lose quality. I tried the Xdiv but he loses a little of color in some places >__<

I would be very appreciated if someone could help me, thanks =)

My guess, judging from your first post, is that you want a lossless codec right now. They won't have any quality loss from the source, however they will be rather big in filesize. x264 does have a lossless mode, however I suggest against x264vfw, and if lossless really is what you want, I think UTVideo is a better choice for a couple reasons (speed and colorspaces, mainly).
If what you wanted instead was a relatively small copy as far as filesize is concerned, then some loss is necessary. The best codec for lossy encodes is indeed x264. However, don't use x264vfw with virtualdub, but use something like zarxgui instead: while not perfect and rather outdate, it is a really simple gui for x264, so you'll really just have to load the footage and hit encode most of the time to get pretty decent results.
