Overlooked Anime's for Videos

Postby MindBug » Thu Jun 05, 2003 11:46 am

Hey all. I'm sure we have all noticed how some animes and songs get used over and over by video creators. Yeah it's probably because so many people like the same animes, but I am wondering what animes people think have been overlooked for video making potential. Lately I have been going through my DVD's and finding more "serious" type animes that I had never thought of using before, which seem like they will work for me now. This ever happen to anyone else from time to time? Has it ever lead to inspiration for a great video?

I've been very lucky in this regard - a lot of my older anime friends have all kinds of weird stuff that they dig up and show people. As a result I've been exposed to a wider variety of anime than most people, and got to claim the honor of making the first Kenji's Spring video ever - and getting a lot of "what anime was that, it looks so cool" at the con when it showed.

lol, I was gonna make a Kenji's Spring video about a year ago....but the video quality of the TokyoPop DVD wasn't too great. Was there a remaster for it?

And to answer the actual topic's request: I haven't seen enough Nadia, Patlabor, NieA_7, Rose of Versailles, Brother Dear Brother, Romeo's Blue Skies, or Nurse Angel Ririka vids that stood out. There's a lot of potential in all of these shows as videos...it just hasn't been found. (I could be wrong and totally not know if there's a great vid for any of these series. if so, let me know)

A Wind Named Amnesia
Miyuki-Chan in Wonderland

I have both..and just started making a vid using the last one...the first one is along the lines of "The Stand" meets anime...

Gestalt, Earthian, and Saiyuki.

Those need to be used more often.

And as for wierd moments using an old Aniem like that, hmm..

I made a slide show with Earthian that made em feel all warm and fuzy inside, if that counts. 0.o

Oh yes, and Night Walker. However, I've found that working with NightWalker footage is hard. I can't tell you why. It just seems like it won't fit together...

Yes, you were supposed to send in the faulty disk to TokyoPop to get the remastered version which is quite nice and got rid of the macroblocking and subtitling errors present on the original DVD release.

Oh I want to one day do one using Key the Metal Idol and Boogiepop Phantom because few use that series. Other series I would liek to do is a Lain/Niea/Haibane combo focusing more on the later two.

Also my next one is going to be a Strawberry Eggs/Fruits Basket combo. Neither has too many videos to it although I bet Fruits Basket will start getting plenty more now all the dvd's are out.

Actually right now I am doing a lip synch video to Gatekeepers.

So yeah, I like to use less commonly done anime in general. I want to avoid Linkinball Z and I am going to avoid Trigun and Hellsing and Bebop vides because it has all been done.

Wanted to make a Strawberry Eggs AMV - don't have it.
Have an idea for a partly Saiyuki AMV - don't have it, the series is fucking enormous, and it'll be a month of Sundays before I can afford it all.

At any rate, thing is, people make AMVs with what they have. Personally, I am stuck making vids with the same series or two for another year simply because I can't fricking afford to buy the entire run of DVDs for six or seven series. I have rent to pay and my job sucks. Not whining; just explaining. If I could buy up a ton of obscure DVDs and make videos for them, TRUST ME, I would. (I wish I could make vids for Rose of Versailles or Oniisama-E, for one. I've wanted to see both since I heard of them through fandubs and whatnot.)

Anyway, the second part to that is that most people start with what they first see, or the obvious stuff, and work their way up to / into the more obscure stuff. It's a rare fan who has a copy of ObscureAnimeX on DVD, but nothing like Eva or CB or Tenchi. It's just the usual path of things.

So, that's why I think many people have AMVs for common series. It's kind of like an exponential curve, with a few people having nice big ranges of source, and most people having the same dozen titles.

Of course I could be completely talking out of my ass. Your mileage may vary. 8)

Guess that makes me the rare fan then..the only popular anime I have is Trigun..everything else is stuff no ones heard of or doesn't use much...only because I'm able to find those kind of DVD's at the video rental store here..(they only have EVA eps 1-8 or so on VHS :? ) or in the bargin bin at Sam Goody for like $10 or less a DVD...And I'm starting to think I'm the only person in this town that's willing to admit they watch anime :?

O_o at the bargain bin part ...reeeeally. *kicks local Sam Goody for not selling anime at all*

Well, it's not a bad thing, of course. I was just attempting to find a reason why AMVs use what they use.
