It sounds like you are using the XP Version. Save to DV AVI (NTSC) and compress to mpeg using TMPEG. i learned premiere on my own, its not really hard. get the program and read through the guides. dont worry about the transparency stuff it will probably confuse you. read about transitions, cutting, and other editing stuff just to get the clips in order. if you have spare time, go on the program and just start experimenting with the tools. you'll have it mastered in a week.
