American Idiot MEP (Interest Gauge)

Postby lynit » Fri Sep 28, 2007 5:47 pm

Ok, had this idea few days back. Asked a few people what they thought of the idea, explained a few things, then thought it over before posting this

Anyways, the idea: American Idiot MEP
For one, while MEPs have been done to certain bands in the past, there haven't been many done to an album. Also, American Idiot is a rock opera. For those who don't know, the term is used to a lyrical story described in the songs itself (Songs relating to each other). American Idiot itself describes the life and times of Jesus of Suburbia (For more info, you can check out Wikipedia's entry for American Idiot, all the tracks are described in further detail)

I think this idea could work. It'd be awesome to see a couple of editors or so do their adaptations or interprations of the character, and his exploits. It'd be cool to see a lot of different anime and editing styles combine with the music itself to deliver what I think is a really cool and interesting story.

Details

For one thing, I think there definitely will be more than one editor per song, maybe one if they can handle it. A lot of the songs transition into each other quite nicely, a few exceptions here and there. The album length is 57:13, with the majority of the songs being over 3 minutes (longest single movement song is probably Wake Me Up When September Ends, at 4:45).

For the multi-movement songs, Jesus of Suburbia and Homecoming, I think it could be done with an editor taking each part, each being around a minute long. Plus, considering the parts themselves transition flawlessly into the next, it could almost be described as a mini-MEP. Editing-wise, I don't think there is much of a specific criteria (Unless you're planning to do dance-style editing, in which case is no). You could almost say the same for whatever you're planning to edit with.

Anyways, it'd be great to hear your thoughts on this so I can hopefully add any more useful details, or improve it. I see potential in this, and I'd like to know what you guys think about it first :D

You use the entire album, and this will turn out WAY too long.

The 57:13 length wouldn't really be bad if the tracks are done really good.
I knonw of multiple good projects that are around that lenght

It does sound like an interesting ideal
It would be tought for you to do though since it sounds like it will need alot of people to participate.
That part where each editor takes a section of the song is just like the way the tracks are in my rainbow cotton MEP.

Good luck with it if you do it.
Multi segment track MEPs are cool but they are tough to pull off sometimes ^_^

I would be interested, but only if my life at the moment ever turns back to normal. (my work hours are ridiculous right now, and my school work is piling up nicely!)

x2

I think it would just dragg on, if you are gonna use the Full songs.. why should one join, everyone could just release full vids to that song they'd use then. Doesn't make much sense to me...

I like the idea of an American idiot mep, but using the full songs instead of a mix..ehh... just doesn't appeal to me :/

So it's mix - short songs ftw? :o

All right. Not so bad really, I'm just presenting this idea and seeing what everyone thinks. So long as the basic premise stays the same
Thanks for that suggestion. Any thing else?
Looks like this could work

As for the "multi-movement songs" you could also split those in the different parts and make a part of each part a track in the mep. Other MEP's are already splitting tracks for 2 editors when they're too long, so you could do it like that with those songs O:

It'd also be effective to have the same editor get multiple parts in different songs to develop his character, and set all the characters side by side.

You know what,im interested =o

I think we decided on this alreaddy, but as long as we arent useing full songs,im interested as stated above, reason why the full album wouldent be a good choice..it will be way over longer then it should have been, and it would be a very long term project,im talkin allooong time, even though ive seen meps longer then what you had in mine,it was easier to get threw them due to the fact they were more Comedy then anything...

Yeah, I kinda had a few thoughts about it.
It sounds like a mix would be a lot easier, plus having the songs edited.

Oh, you mean split it further. That could work for some parts. Though I really don't see why an editor can't handle a minute long part =/

It'd also be effective to have the same editor get multiple parts in different songs to develop his character, and set all the characters side by side.

that'd be pretty cool.

Well, it seems we have some interest. Mind if I post some more technicalities?
The usual editing requirements, 29.97 fps, Lagarith, the works. Source-wise, I'm open to anything but shonen anime, because I fail to see how Dragon Ball, Naruto, Bleach, or Final Fantasy will have anything to do with this (Although if you give me a really good reason why you're using it, I should give you a go-ahead)

Ok, I'm gonna start making a mix in a short while just for the heck of it. While we're at it, any tracks that should be cut out. I'm thinking of having just the following (Majority of these tracks will be edited for length too :0) The italicized tracks are the ones I think may or may not be included.

Intro - American Idiot (Really small version)
Track 01 - Jesus of Suburbia (possibly full)
Track 02 - Holiday
Track 03 - Blvd of Broken Dreams
Track 05 - Are We The Waiting
Track 06 - St.Jimmy
Track 07 - She's a Rebel
Track 08 - Letterbomb
Track 09 - Homecoming
Track 10 - Whatsername

What do you think?
