Just putting an idea out there

Postby godix » Mon Dec 25, 2006 9:15 pm

Recently I've thought of doing an entire thematically complete MEP. Each segment would follow AND PROGRESS the theme until at the natural conclusion. Each segment would use different series and there would no straight forward story from one segment to another, instead each would carry the theme from where the last ended until it hit a logical stopping point.

To use an obvious example, Love. Segment 1 would be a couple meeting. Segment 2 would be the early days of a romance. Segment 3 would be when things start getting serious. Segment 4 would be the wedding. Segment 5 would be when the romance dies down and boredom/in depth knowledge of each other sets in. Segment 6 would be arguments. Segment 7 would be cheating on each other. And the final segment would either be divorce or working past their problems and becoming one of those happily married old couples, whichever ending you prefer. There would be different characters for each segment and no attempt to put them into an overall story, instead each would carry the theme from where the last ended, but taken as a whole it would be thematically complete. A general plot without specific characters or events if you will.

So I have two questions. First off, would anyone be interested in a project like this? Secondly what themes are general enough to work? Here's the themes I think would be broad enough to do although I'm sure you guys can think of more:

Love - with the segments I mentioned above
Death - Finding out they will die, acceptance, last days, death, loved ones reactions, loved ones acceptance or if a darker ending is desired loved one suicide
Life - Start with birth and move on to youth, teenager, college age, adult, retired, mentally decrepit old, and death
Mental illness - Start off with 'normal' and slowly progress down the road to batshit insane. Would require lurking in forums for schizophrenia and the like to try and make it at least vaguely accurate. Probably wouldn't carry well with multiple editors.
Cities - Start with a small primitive hut in the woods (Inu Yasha maybe, or Howls Moving Castle perhaps). Progress to feudal era town (Rurouni Kenshin), industrial revolution era city (Princess Mononoke), gangster era type dark crime setting (no clue what anime would work but the Batman cartoon fits exactly), modern/near future urban wasteland (Akira), authoritarian utopia (Metropolis), far future tech (Cowboy Bebop spaceport type thing), large scale destruction of city (almost anything that ends with the city being wiped off the face of the map), post apocalyptic ruins (Nausicca), and finally a return to the first segment music with primitive looking people rebuilding among the rubble (I have no idea). I picture this idea using mostly classical music, EG Moonlight Sonata for scanning over a ruined post apocalyptic city or Wagner for the city destruction. As you can tell this is the theme I've thought about the most, actually I've tried it a couple times but never got results I liked, but I have no idea if anyone else would find it even remotely interesting or not.

NOTE: This isn't a new project I'm announcing. I have a different project I'm heading as well as my own videos to do so if I end up starting this it wouldn't be until at earliest May or June. I'm just asking for feedback on the idea, people who might be interested if I did start this down the road, or ideas on how exactly the project should be done.

I really like this idea. I especially like the Life and City themes. I'm definitely interested.

I like the sound of this. I've thought of a possible idea for you:

Revenge: couple in love or family member or close friends; death of one of the pair by someone else; grieving by the survivor; survivor seeks revenge (could be shown training or honing his/her skills); survivor searches for killer; survivor finds killer and exacts revenge; either relief at getting revenge or sorrow at becoming a killer himself/herself.
"Didn't I say something clever earlier?"
"Dunno, I was probably asleep when you said it."

Pretty interesting (depending on the theme chosen, could be more or less interesting).

This was something that we originally wanted to do with ProjeKct Life; it turned out to be unwieldy... then it died

Do I want to see it come to life? Hell yes.

Since I'm up for that *cough* other project, I'm certain I'll keep up with this idea as well.

Anything to be learned in it's demise or is it that typical too many creators/project head lost interest death?

Any suggestions on what would be more rather than less interesting?

I'm not sure this idea would work with different series and characters each segment. It'd be very hard to keep it vauge enough to work with different segments yet specific enough to not confuse the audience beyond belief. Either way, revenge just isn't a theme I personally would be interested in. I saw Kill Bill. I didn't like it that much. I have no interest in creating something like it.

Hmmm, I hadn't thought of that. None of the projects I've headed before had vital segments so if someone dropped out it wasn't a major deal. Backup editors, yeah, I'll need to plan for that if I do this idea. Thanks for pointing that out.

If handled correctly by all the participants, I think this could turn out to be an incredibly cool MEP (I especially like the "cities" idea you threw out there). Don't know if I'd join myself, but I'd LOVE to see it put together successfully.

Well, for me personally, if you went with love, my interest level would shoot through the floor for wanting to participate. The cities idea would have the opposite effect on me. So, more original themes would have me more interested.

Will the videos be edited at the same time with everyone getting a certain sub-theme or will they be made one after each other so the next editor can see where the other left off?

Actually that one fell for one main reason: first the lack of activity by the coordinator, then outright disappearance. I guess that's something of an obvious lesson.Technically the project was 70% finished, but the lack of a coordinator - and the (reasonable) unwillingness of others to take over it is what killed it.

In retrospect one thing that irked me slightly is the tendency to slip into action. Not that action is bad, but it's probably a reflection of the sources that much of "life's drama" tended to, somewhere somehow, divert into to hand-to-hand fighting and/or explosions. I was an offender in that to some degree, too.

I'd really like to see an MEP that finally accomplishes something in a serious sense thematically, rather than through sheer flash.
