Otohiko: yeah, cropping and resizing is most likely the way to go. If you're afraid of losing some action off to the sides, you could do it selectively and crop more from one side than the other.

If the video seems to be a bit grainy or noisy, you'll probably want to clean it up before resizing, to avoid amplifying any noise. I recommend the following filters in this order:

crop
deen
fluxsmooth
fastlinedarken
lanczosresize
and a tiny bit of warpsharp (you might not need this)

This is, in essence, a postprocessing filter chain. Using it before editing would result in a whole lot of hassle, so you'd be a lot better off just editing letterboxed and making the adjustments at the end.

EDIT_________

Nevermind the letterboxing... I guess if you want to be a real stickler about quality, resizing animorphic footage twice would degrade the video. You'll want to just edit the weird-looking animorphic footage and resize/crop at the end. So the postprocessing chain would actually look something like this:

deen
fluxsmooth
fastlinedarken
lanczosresize (to the proper aspect ratio, with the height being 480)
crop (left and right to get a final resolution of 720x480)
and a tiny bit of warpsharp (again, optional)

Yea, the selectiveness is probably key here - I found that some scenes stretch from 16:9 to 4:3 just fine, while others don't. Well, I suppose that's a bit of extra work for me - which is alright, so long as it doesn't impact too much on the video quality.

I've actually started experimenting with editing now, so we'll see where this goes...

Now, dagnabbit, I know I put 4:45 in as my top choice way back on page 6. :)

But I'm game for anything. :)

BTW, newbish technical questions (but you all knew I'm not a good technical editor) - what's the standard 4:3 resolution/what resolution are you looking for in the project? Is is a) 640x480 b) 720x540 c) ?

Otherwise, I'm actually making progress, got about 25 seconds done (and it's probably the hardest part, too). Doubtless though, even when I reach the end of the track, there will be many things to change, tweak and improve than I can shake a stick at...

Jasper-Isis seems to know a lot more about this than I do but I have one thing to throw in.

Converting widescreen to 4:3 isn't neccicarily a huge deal. All the movies you see on TV have gone through this proccess after all. What they do in the film industry is crop selectivly. If the main charicter or action is in the middle, they crop equally on both sides. If the action is on the right they crop off the left and vice versa. Using this selective cropping you can minimize the loss of important visuals.

Sorry BMA, I should put a list of requests on the first page to organize all this. I'll do that this afternoon and we can all see where we stand. Nothing is final yet except for the intro (unless Otohiko runs into trouble.)

Heh, well, the only trouble I've had so far is spending a few hours cutting out little anime baby pictures from an ending sequence, and then arranging them on the screen with a little bit of motion applied...

Isn't it funny how the simplest part musically can often be the hardest to edit?

Anyway, there goes my linguistics essay plan for this week

You want to shoot for showing a progression rather than a single emotional state. For example: Instead of just showing a bunch of scenes of him being depresed show the incident and his reaction to it, then show what he does about it, and possibly the resolution or his coming to terms with it. Instead of showcasing an emotion try to make it as fully fleshed or 3 dimentional a representation of that period in his life as you can, that's the goal of the project. Got a little wordy there, this isn't set in stone but that's the kind of thing we want to shoot for, as long as you avoid a lot of pointless action it should be fine.

Is that some thing you could do with the section at 4:45? I belive you are the only one so far to request it.

ah, I just finished watching the 8th evangelion dvd and end of eva an hour ago. its 4:30am now. My head hurts.

Anyway, I get your idea and Im thinking through It. However my preferences for sections are changing every few days. I'm still learing to appreciate type of music, and this song is the only of its kinda i currently have. I'l probaly pick up some album by dream theatre or KC sometime. Anyway, currently the only section im thinking my idea would realy work with is the Thematic Break. So I dont know if I'l be able to use the Dryving rhythm well enough. Plus I think it would be too early in the song, the main characters in argentosoma are in their early-mid 20's. Whatever happens though, I probaly woent start editing till the end of this month/early next. This is because I've got another project I'm currently working on. But I dont start studying again till mid febuary, so i'l have alot of spare time.

Well as my editi button is no where to be found at the momment (dont ask me i just dont see it) Im going to have to mak another post of my trakcs that i like

1) 8:17-10:08 Bridge/Thematic Break - Rahxephon - Alright this section just keeps calling me and i have a good idea....may not be what your lookin for at the sections but it just keeps popping into my head.
Ill start of by showing some of the battles where Ayato is struggling. Show pain suffering (or atlest make it look that way) Have it look like everything is lost and its over. Then show what i guess you could call a last burst of energy as he rises and defeats his enemy's. Sorry if im not making to much sense i just got back from school and im not really in a coherint (or spelling) mood.

2) 0:00-1:50 Introduction- Evangelion (no im not trying to copy but this section is almost identical with Songbird21's idea...i was thinking the same thing and then i read hers and was like damn.

3) Sorry i cant really think of a third over all section. But i would take anything you where willing to give me...if you stlll need editors that is. Very sorry it took me so long to awnswer.

Pen-Pen - have you thought about setting up the FTP yet?

I have something that will be ready for watching and critiquing (lots of that, hopefully) within, well, hours not days.

Okay. I'm not really prone to begging but.....pleeeaaaaasssseeee give me 8:17 to 10:08! Now that Otohiko officially has been given the first segment the thematic break is the only thing I think I can pull off and have it look my best. Please? With pocky on top?

Hehe, wow, everyone wants that segment now!

Well, just so you know, like it though I may, I withdraw any claim to it... I guess if this is the only other one Songbird listed among her top picks...

...but gee, I for one never expected there to be so many competing interests in track selection!

Although I must note that Toji Fujiwara has the same picks there... and bum's are fairly close.

Perhaps what we can/should try to do is toss some ideas around and see if one of you finds something else they like. Either that, or Pen-Pen can just excercise his managerial right and just pick someone :P

I should have a full-length beta by tonight; I laid everything out story-wise, though I'm sure there's still a lot to do in editing (I also haven't cropped many things yet).

Since I have a whole month free after this, I'm pretty much completely sure that, footage allowing, I will take on another track here. :) I promise not to bid on the 2nd track and 8:17 though - any others you DON'T want me to be eyeing?

Wow, Oto, you are FAST! It's going to take me a while to get started because I still have to collect my source AND watch it. T__T

Pen-pen:

Here's my idea for the "journey reprise" section. It is essentially the last section before the credits come in, so I think the theme I'll go for is "Self-Actualization" - to develop or achieve one's full potential. If you listen to the section (which starts at 14:32) you'll notice that the melody progressively rises higher and higher, which would be perfect for such a theme.

I'll use the anime Kaleido Star, as it clearly follows the main character, Sora, in her trials and difficulties, as well as personal growth, as she works her way to stardom at the circus called Kaleido Stage. The show has stunning visuals and an easily conveyed message that could potentially bring the project to a spectacular finish.

The only problem I foresee starts at 15:48, where the music reverts back to an earlier "style." Coming from the previous section, it would be a bit anti-climatic, AMV-wise. I would prefer to bring my segment to a climax before 15:48, rather than dragging it on for another 35 seconds. What do you think should be done to resolve this issue?

My suggestion would be to start the credits right there. We could have Sora, on the trapeze, swing into 15:48 while the credit words/pictures start flying into view around her. Footage from Kaleido Star would then provide a background for the credits as more info comes flying in and out. Then at 16:23 we transition into the last segment, which wraps up the whole video as Projekct: Life.

I think this is a feasible idea, especially since the last section, which is only 20 seconds long, is probably not long enough to display credits for all the editors AND wrap up the project. DrngdKreationz sounds like a good candidate for editing the flying credits section. Pen-pen, I know I'm kind of encroaching on that last section that you wanted, but these are just suggestions and you're free to choose whichever option you like. Just let me know what you think. xP

Some more inquiries:
Have we got a CD copy of the song in WAV format?
What fps are we using?

I plan to have all the Kaleido Star season 1 DVDs by the beginning of January, and I'll probably begin to edit before then.
