Well, if DWP is working with WMM - then I'm really not sure about how well it can actually export the project. I don't suppose it can export a HuffYUV file, or can it? If it can, then there's probably no problem, since VirtualDub will have no problems scaling it down to a solid XviD or DivX encode (oh yea, I can't stop raving about how good the 2-Pass XviD/DivX method as per the guides is for HQ encodes!)

**

Now... I took more time to watch Third Stone again, and I think I'm coming to agree with most of the choices there. Definitely, the color change is mostly effective - and I scale down my complaint about brightness to just a few scenes early on - it's kind of hard to find the outlines on a few shots, particularly Naota's face in a few places, for some reason.

Other than that, I'm definitely coming around to see the good points here. For some reason, the length doesn't bother me anymore (I think the color transition helps), and the color coming back makes for some nice psychedelic moments. I hope you bring the titles back - or will you? I thought they were pretty good in the last version, in fact I thought it'd be nice to have more of them.

I think this is just along the lines of what Fantasia calls for, visually and musically speaking. You're probably on the right track; let's hope it keeps improving.

Could be a 1337 video (forgive the pun, I just noticed the timing of the file  )

Pen-pen: I suggest you actually drop a line to Audio Help. I think there's ways of converting the frame rate and adjusting audio length without losses or speed changes for either one.

Oddly, I never had any of this reattaching-audio stuff - I just exported, and off it went. Though I did run into problems if I messed up the interleaving or put the sound bitrate to something other than 160kbps, but frankly - I never saw a need for anything else...

Hi I'm new to this I wasn't sure if I'm supposed to do an entire song of just a min of one either way I uploaded the begining of my video to the FTP server. It is made with the old megaman cartoon and some techno song. Please tell me how bad it blows. Its still in the early stages of being made so and suggestions might be able to be worked into it. Thank you

1. Welcome to our new participants. I'll be looking forward to seeing your vids on the server.

2. pen pen, a change in frequency by .1% is imperceptible i believe. A chromatic half step is a difference in frequency by 6%, half of a chromatic half step would be 3%, which I think is near the limits of what the human ear can distinguish.

3. WMM (when it does decide to work) exports a DV-AVI using Microsoft's DirectX thing (DirectShow). The thing isn't frame-specific, so parts of my video fall out of synch when I export the video. VirtualDub can't import DirectShow videos because MS patented it and told Avery Lee to modify Vdub. EO Video can, but messes up fades and looks very choppy. So the best option is TMPGenc it, then VDub to huffyuv avi, which looks, well, at least better than the WMV. The biggest problem is the desynch though. The best I could offer with this is to use the last two minutes (you still get the idea of the video from it), where the desynch isn't too bad.

The other option is to convert the WMV into AVI with VirtualDub. However, what is on the server is about as good as I can get with WMM in terms of WMV quality.

In summary, I have two options: 1) A better-video quality but shortened video, or 2) A lower-quality full length video.
I don't have qualms with either option really, though I'm leaning a bit towards 1.

4. I was preferring this project not to go deeply into techno, especially if is characterized by heavy and repetitive downbeat-upbeat meters, or else this is going to turn into another Animix/DDR. Well, I haven't even watched the techno videos, so I can't judge yet.

Yes. That's the idea - Fantasia isn't something that's very restricted musically. Do check with the project members on the musical choice - since we can give you good advice, opinion, etc. - but ultimately, the hope is that it remains open to encompass as much different sorts of instrumental music as possible.

So far as I see, yes.

Of the videos underway right now, we already have classical orchestral music, acoustic covers of psychedelic rock, orchestral version of a classic rock piece, and even modern electronic-driven avant-garde.

The more, the better.

Pen-Pen - just got a chance to look at your new version finally - excellent stuff, absolutely on the right track. I might have more technical things to say once I see it more, but overall, it seems to get more impressive as you go on. There are some points where it's merely so-so - flows along, nothing overly stunning, but then there's a lot of places where both the mood and beat sync are just really, really good.

On first impression, there's a part after 3:30 where you have a series of very even, rhythmical cuts - probably the best beat sync I've seen from you - followed directly by that whole 'flashback' scene which is likely the best mood sync combined with a lot of buildup from the previous sequences.

Great work, let's hope you can keep it up. I definitely love the technical choices here, and even though I've never seen Memories yet, it tells a coherent story even the first time you watch it.

I could sort of catch hints of some slightly more confusing bits, and I'll spot them more when I get a chance...

Having a variety of musical styles will certainly be important and may even be a pivotal to the project's reception. The more variety we have, the more pieces we can include without being redundant. Also more people will watch the entire show.

That being said however, I wouldn't say that anything instrumental is appropriate. Like DWP I have reservations about techno and there may be other styles, though I can't think of any off hand, that will not fit in with the rest of the pieces.

DWP - First off, I love the banner. What's the picture in the second vertical stripe? About vid quality: grrr WMM makes me angry and I've never even used it! More than once I've tried to help someone with a video only to be thwarted by it's export options. As for the two choices, I'd have too see how much higher quality the second half would be and how off the sync is but I would say to put up the whole thing.

Bakadeshi - speaking of musical choices did you upload that song? I was looking for it but I didn't see it.

Hmm - I guess before I start deciding on my next choice - how are others on instrumental metal-type stuff - well, not necceserily metal per se, but just aggressive, guitar+drums+bass driven instrumental music in general?

I think this might be a difference in interpretations of the project. I recall this project was started in another thread talking about classical music in amvs, which is where I got the bias that the project would feature noncontemporary music. Of course, the title of this topic is Instrumental Anime Project, which is quite different from the original topic of classical AMVs.

I was approaching this as a revival of Fantasia, which took played images against noncontemporary music at the time of its production. When I saw this project arise, I was primarily expecting classical, jazz, folk, concert band, and new age, as though the project was intended to stray from the already-popular modern pop, rock, and dance genres. So, I'm not for distorted guitars and sharp percussion (namely snare drums), unless they were incorporated in a piece that wasn't of modern popular culture genres.

yes my song choice is in the songs folder. its called "Jared Hudson - The final summoning"

I've seen your new vid pen pen, excellent work. I like the new transitions in the begining, makes it less ... well makes it more interesting visually, lets put it that way ;p

Btw, that song was stuck in my head the whole day, thanks to your amv
I will have to get back on you after watching it a few times on any technical sugestions though. Its pretty good as it stands right now. Oh yea, I did notice the timing on your SOS flash sequence seems to have shifted off a bit since the update. was this intentional?

downwithpants: another excellent peice. Only thing i can pick at on first watch is the quality issues... Is this the max WMM format can output to quality wise? I mean can you output a better wuality file for actual inclusion into the project? if so then its probably all good.

Also, is there a deadline setup on when all vids have to be completed by?

If you need more material for inclusion, my Angel;s Redemption vid may be considered for inclusion, but it will primiere at Otakon, so it won't be anything secret. Basically I don't mind it included if you need more to fill the project, but its up to you.

When talking about whether or not to include techno music, I have to ask what kind. Do you mean something like Alan Parsons with a lot of synths and so forth but also a lot of flowing change in the song's sound, or do you mean a club mix with the same thumping TR-707 kick at 120bps through the whole piece? The first type might work, the second really wouldn't. "Ambient" would probably depend on the piece.

While I don't think we should exclude music because of date or genre, it does make sense that everything that goes in here should really 'stand out' from what you can hear in the club or on commercial radio. Club music already has a home in single videos and things like the Animix projects. 'Metal' is also kinda iffy in that it's a much too general description of a type of music (kinda like 'Alternative' being applied to every late-90's group other than the Backstreet Boys). Otohiko's taste in rock music certainly lies along the lines of diverging from the norm, and some rock/metal bands (even a few popular ones like Tull, Sabbath, and Maiden) have produced a number of relatively complex and unique songs, but others (most Rap-Core bands come to mind) just play their power-chord riffs over a skilled but excessivly repetative drummer. As such some rock music might work (esp. that which combines rock with other, more acoustically-oriented styles - as can be seen with Jethro Tull and King Crimson) can be appropriate but most really would not. The fact that most rock music also has (semi) intelligable words also puts a real damper on its use given the fact that this is an instrumental project.

The titles are coming back to ThirdStone. They're out temporarily because I'm remaking them with image files to allow me more control and help make the text render better.

13'37" => 1337 :)

Perhaps you've just thought of a new title for my segment, Otohiko. People might mistake it for 4'33", though. :)
may seeds of dreams fall from my hands -
and by yours be pressed into the ground.
