Trapeze

From the makers of Mononoke, Toei Animation brings you Kuchu Buranko, or Trapeze.

Plot (if you can call it that):
This story is a series of occurrences for about one week from the 17th to Christmas of December which happens to each characters who live in Tokyo. And it is linked with broadcast time. The chief characters of each episode appear also as a supporting player of other episode. This anime is the "hybrid animation" for which "Live-action", "Rotoscoping", "2D animation", and "The composite images of them" were used for every scene.

I loved Mononoke. It is one of the most thrilling and artistic anime I have ever seen, so much that I was awestruck to find out it came from Toei Animation, rather than some maverick production team like Shaft. One of the main selling points of Trapeze is that it has the same staff as Mononoke. It was enough info to get me to check it out.

The show has the same rainbow vomit on everything that made its predecessor stand out, but in terms of animation style, at many parts it reminds me a lot more of Mind Game than anything else. This is because it is constantly shifting its style and often goes into a splice of animation and live action. This show spouts weirdness out of every pore. It is episodic and is sure to provide fresh entertainment every episode.
I admit that the first episode was a bit weak, but I was laughing out of my seat throughout the second episode.
Here's a screen from the episode to give you an idea.

Best show of the season, maybe. Has bakemonogatari-like vibes in terms of style, but is another thing altogether. Definitely will watch to end.

I love these kind of quirky shows. First ep wasn't exactly great, but the animation more than made up for it, so I'm definately watching this.

The acid trip is over. In the end, all I can say is that this anime was definitely unusual. It strove to be different. A fine experiment on behalf of the producers with not necessarily the greatest result. It was weird and entertaining, but not in a grand and exciting way. There were a few episodes that had me in stitches, but the majority of them were somewhat dry. This show requires some imagination, and a great appreciation for outright weirdness. If you're tired of the same old same old stuff, I highly recommend this show, but it doesn't hold a candle to Mononoke, and it definitely isn't becoming a mainstream classic.
