The first season has several themes going for it, such as focusing on specific characters as so-called "into episodes," while also maintaining Itoshiki's pursual of a means of an end. By the second season there aren't many characters remaining, Itoshiki forgets that he wants to die, and the show near-completely focuses on the underlying theme of theological analysis through practical self-observation, while also making cheap gags and occasional otaku-centric humor. This continued to be the basis of the third season and OVAs. It's all love.
