Episode 5 marks the point that Yasuhiro Takemoto is directing it right now.
And bwahaha on Konota singing the original Dragonball Z opening!
SO many MMORPG references are made here. Heck, I actually found this episode a lot more amusing than the previous ones.

Well, it's a summer beach episode. Which means swimsuits and fanservice.

Oh crap, another gag that probably blew most of the episode's budget appears! There's a lot of low animation scenes later that balance it out.

If you don't mind spoilers:
That's one nice Initial D parody. Drifting at 40 kmph in a Subaru Vivio RX-R? Absolutely!

After the beach segment, I almost expected a hot springs scene. Well, we do get a budget-saving open bath portion. Favorite part: Konata's sneaking behind Miyuki to create mischief.
Then the obligatory scary storytelling segment and a scene with Tsukasa that mimics KyoAni's work on AIR (among other things).

And we finally get to meet Miyuki's mom! (She's been waving to us in the OP every episode. :P ) All that's left is the appearance of Konata's dad.

The ending is cute. And it's not Konata or Kagami turn this time.
Tsukasa sings Valentine Kiss by 80's idol singer and actress Sayuri Kokusho (& Onyanko Club) with Konata playing the rabid fangirl singing along. :D
I LOL'd at episode 6!
THAT is how you do an Initial D parody! They pretty much nailed every main aspect of the series, and it probably cost quite of bit of their budget.

Man, the teacher sucks at directions. No thanks to Konota though!

DAMN, Miyuki has a nice body!

Though Konota's swimsuit....ummm well it reinforces the fact she's freakin' small!

Yeah, shooting the watermelon does seem wasteful and messy. Of course "those guys" learned it the hard way when "he" did it.

Has anyone payed close attention to Miyuki in the bath house scene? Now you know why you get damaged hair after your fun time in the ocean. :o

Speaking of bath houses, it also reinforces the fact that Konota's hair is viciously long!

Hmmm, were Kagami and Tsukasa talking about that "time of month" which would suck especially if you go to the beach?

That was a pretty trippy sequence of Tsukasa imagining being underwater once she put that shell up into her ear. And it ended in a rather....yeah!

Lucky Channel was very amusing this time especially when Akari beats up Minoru, shows the finger, and sort of bashes the state of the otaku of today.
Man, I have a feeling this one of the few series where we get to see the parents of the main characters. Can't wait to see Konota's dad though!

So I just got into this show and I'm somewhat enjoying it - definitely Azu for otaku.

That said, the Japanese fans are going a bit overboard with the OP. On Mixi (the Japanese version of Myspace) they've pretty much taken every individual line from the OP song and turned it, complete w/ a screencap or animated GIF, into its own community.

Goddamned otaku.

It's not otaku if it's not overboard.

What the heck was that phone that Tsukasa was using in Ep. 5?!?! That's like from the 50's or something. For a show based on today's world (what with the MMORPG's and the Virtua Fighter 5 crap), that phone seems oddly out of place...

Haha yeah, that Initial D parody was much better than School Rumble's version of it. What topped it off was Konata's impression of Natsumi Mogi at the end of it, and then seeing the teacher's expression. LOL X 100

What was the Tsubaka/seashell scene referencing?

The dialog is a reference to the comedian Hiroshi (ヒロシ) whose gag was recounting pitiful events in his life followed by repeating the line, "I am Hiroshi." (ヒロシです) while music plays in the background.

As for the visuals, I'm assuming it's a spoof on KyoAni's typical animation techniques used in contrast with the dialog for absurd effect. Although KyoAni isn't the only company to animate a scene like that...

The end gag was for those people (like me) who didn't get the "Tsukasa desu" part of it a laugh. Heh, sometimes simpler is better.

It's an analog rotary phone. Disregarding the fact that they live at a shinto shrine they also do not live in a metropolitan area so it is not out of line at all for them to still have an old rotary phone.

All the old folks can come out of the wordwork and laugh with me if you remember party line service here in the USA.
