I think it's got arguably the most bizarre and daring promo video out of all the new shows of the season.

The source material looks pretty funny too, from what I've seen. I don't expect too much from a 4-koma adapation, but so long as it's amusing and makes me laugh I won't be disappointed.

If nothing else (I doubt it), we're going to enjoy another KyoAni work (of art).;)

Judging from what i saw/read up to now, this may be the first anime I'll watch every episode as it comes out. I don't think I'll be able to wait for the whole serie to finish airing.

When watching this series, I think it's important not to expect something like Haruhi or Kanon. This is mostly like Kyoto Animation's idea of letting their staff take a break in between big projects, since they've got Clannad coming up. It's a nice idea from a business standpoint; let staff take a break by working on a 4-koma adaptation, which doesn't require high level animation or good plot progression (especially since there's really no plot).

I've seen the first episode, and it's nothing like Kyoto Animation's earlier works. Don't expect stunningly detailed artwork, as this is a 4-koma after all. It's more along the lines of Azumanga Daioh, except with more dialogue humor rather than visual gag humor. But yeah, the OP was really awesome to watch (many people have compared it to Hare Hare Yukai, and for good reason). I also loved the Street Fighter II reference in episode 1.

/me gets ready for the inevitable OP parodies. :P

As for the actual episode? It's pretty much what I expected, a slice-of-life comedy based on a 4-koma (4-panel comic strip). Which means, relatively short 'gag' stories about everyday things and situations. It's going to be interesting to see how the characters are developed in this show. And the inevitable AzuDai (and Hidamari Sketch) comparisions.

Yeah, the so-called "dorama" from a bunch of peeps thinking that KyoAni has "betrayed" them by giving them something that's actually "below par". Sometimes people can be so spoiled.

Did these people even do any research on Lucky Star when it was announced that KyoAni was adapting it? I would assume that it would be pretty clear that this series would be a departure from KyoAni's previous anime productions in style and content. Based on the source material and comparing it to other anime, Lucky Star isn't 'below par' (which, in golf, is a GOOD thing), it's about average. The animation is good, with a decent amount of detail and movement (not counting the over-the-top OP), and it has simple, clean and appealing designs. I've seen anime with much, much worse production quality.

I suppose there are people that only want KyoAni to continue making the same anime(s) over and over again or stay in a narrow range of genres. It's like expecting/desiring that every Adam Sandler movie is going to be another Billy Madison or Happy Gilmore. :|

Is it wrong for the people in KyoAni to want to stretch themselves and stray out of the bishoujo/h-game-based/light-novel categories that they have historically done work in?

And is it just me, or are the main girls all left handed (or somewhat ambidextrous)? Tsukasa and Kagami use chopsticks left-handed. Konata used chopsticks in her right hand for a scene, but was holding a mechanical pencil in her left hand as if she was writing with it. Miyuki and Konata held the ice cream cone in their left hands as they ate it. And Miyuki was using the slicer in her left hand while holding the potato in her right (think about how you hold them when preparing food). Of course, Miyuki is a klutz, so her being right-handed and using the slicer improperly is a possibility. :P

I don't expect Lucky☆Star to be a KyoAni masterpiece, or the best of the season, or even a personal favorite. It's just a simple filler project to pass the time, give their staff a break, and save up money to make Clannad look really, really good. But hey, it can succeed as mindless fun, which is fine by me. Too bad 4-komas are so niche, even among anime circles.

Comedy can be hit or miss for many people. Especially if it's the subtle, low-key humor in everyday situation type.
